Would you change this tyre?

Hi all! Newbie to the E90post forums and new to BMW's in general - bought my E92 a few weeks back, and just by accident happened to notice this on the inside rim of one of my front tyres.

I've no idea how the previous owner managed to do this...looking to some of the more adventurous drivers out there for their opinion on what could have caused it?

And also...maybe an obvious one really but would you get it changed if it was your car? Apologies for the poor quality pics, it's at a very awkward angle.

Change it. Not worth the risk when it's the only thing keeping you safe.

Thanks, thought as much. Sadly strapped for cash since buying it and adding to the list of stuff I need to do to it

If I'd done it, I wouldn't replace it, it's purely cosmetic.

However, it could have been done in such a way that has weakened the carcass of the tyre, which would be an issue.

Okay...tbh my only concern was it not being seated on the rim properly from what I can tell. I just wonder how it happened...

It's sat on the rim fine, it's the inside bead of the tyre that holds the air in, not the bit you can see.

For example, this stretched tyre will most likely hold air absolutely fine as the bead of the tyre is seated against the rim of the tyre. You can see the part of the tyre that is damaged on yours sat clearly away, and that it does nothing but sit against the outer edge of the rim, and is designed to help protect from kerbing.

It's only the rim protector of the tyre that has been damaged which is not structural so perfectly fine.

It's been done probably by running the wheel against a kerb - i know because I've done it myself! (the kerb has acted like a wood plane on the rubber).

When I did mine, I asked BMW to take a look at it, as i was in for my MOT. They said that it was the rim protector doing it's job, and that there was nothing to worry about.
