Changed the power steering fluid at 60K -- yuck

OK first in case someone is debating this job, it is the *easiest* one on our list.

Suck out the fluid (you can get maybe 10 oz out of the reservoir) refill, run the steering wheel back and forth, remove fluid, refill, repeat two more times and you have used up your liter of fluid.

Second, yuck. The fluid looked grayish brown and looked like it had tiny lumps like a milkshake you let in the sink overnight. Then again the light was poor.

You likely won't notice any improvement, but your pump will thank you for it. Over the life of the fluid it is pressurized, heated (as a result of the pressure) and sheared in the pump and rack. In the process, the fluid wears down just like oil in your crankcase and becomes much more viscous and inconsistent. So you won't really notice any improvement in steering feel, but the life of your P/S pump might end sooner than it was designed to if you skip this maintenance.

What fluid did you use for the 335d? ATF or 11s.
My power steering is squeaking on cold starts and want to change filter and fluid.

Thanks

I read the filter is combined with the reservoir. Also what brand of fluid did you use.

Thanks

Does this imply that reservoir has to be changed to change filter? Right or wrong, I have never changed power steering fluid in 37 some odd years of maintaining vehicles. Only time fluid was practically changed out was when I replaced return hose (low pressure) and lost a decent amount of fluid. Even after 80,000 miles, fluid looked nice and red on Dodge truck.

I will go inspect my 335d fluid for yucky color.

I believe it should. The part number is # 32 41 6 851 218. It is on ebay for about $25 for an OEM part. I will be doing the service this upcoming holiday break. I will take some pictures. I don't know if I can going to do the drain and refill method, or maybe I form a vacuum to suck out the old fluid.
Also I found out we use the 11 S fluid for the 335d. Thanks realoem.com

I'm not sure if this applies to E90s, but here is some more info on cleaning the filter/screen element inside the reservoir:

Go by what it says on the cap. It will say either 11s or ATF. Mine is ATF.

THanks mob, I just keep hearing stories of how the 11s sticker falls off and says ATF on cap on all of them. I have ATF on my cap, so I am going to stick to that.

Just changed mine out with Red Line 30504 ATF as well; at about 40k miles. Not bad from compared to my Touareg with 70k miles using CHF 202.

I used a empty jug of juice (my toddler has a 2 a week habit) and a baster... I recommend using a worm clamp on the baster / bulb stem, after a few sucks the bulb slips and tries to cause a scene.

I bought 11s but realized my cap also says ATF. Is that unique to the D?

Real oem shows the pn for the cap as 11s
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/show...diagId=32_1661

Fluids list shows both. Even with vin entry.

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/show...diagId=02_0091

Apparently the 11s cap is just a sticker over the atf cap that easily falls off. I saw a pic in another thread.

I spooned out about a tbsp of fluid and it looked light brown.

The D takes ATF not CHF11S. Only non-D models take 11S fluid.
