Unhappy another smoking issue (RB turbos)

335i AT with 107,000 miles on the clock

The car is making good power the problem I am having is this gray oil smelling smoking pouring out of the exhaust.

The smoking does not start until the oil temperature goes about 160.. At stop lights the whole intersection is filled with this foul smelling smoke.

I am thinking its the turbo seals, (I hope not), or a cracked valve cover.

I have recently replaced the Valve Cover Gasket, and also upgraded to the RB PCV valve..

Has anyone has the same experience. The thing that stumps me is the car doesn't emit any smoke until the oil temperature needle moves past 160.

Holding boost fine. Running e85 and she pulls good. The smoke is embarrassing.

Also my oil gauge shows full still.... Weird.

I say seals. I had the same symptoms with a MS3 and the seals were the problem. I switched to Rotella T3 and it was a temp band aid but the smoke came back.

Thanks for the quick reply.

I'm thinking its the seals as well. Just so weird that its only when the oil comes to temperature.
I guess when oil gets hot it thins out a little bit?

Can I use Rotella in the N54?

Sounds more like PCV and valve cover issue. Perhaps the PCV ports are clogged up. I had the same issue after I went fully catless. But after a few track days and PCV upgrade and a few oil change, it has been completely smokeless for the last 16000 miles and doesn't eat any oil during normal street driving (1/2 qt for a full track weekend, which I think is normal). Mine you I am still on stock turbo with 49000 miles on the car right now.

I hope so...

I am going to take the valve cover off. What ports should I be looking at?

There are quite a few on the valve cover and the block as well. Have look at the technical PDFs on the sticky threads.

Try change your oil more often at 3-5k miles interval and rev the engine more. I think a lot of problem with PCV is due to condensation and slush buildups from cars that don't see boost very often (which is typical for street driving).

seems like 30,000 miles is about the longest aftermarket hybrid turbos last.

I did not try a high viscosity oil. What type do you recommend? I don't want to hurt the engine
