New M25 speed cameras - Heathrow

Just a heads up. Yesterday I noticed the new style cameras on the m4 bridge heading southbound. There are some cones on the side of the road too. Also I noticed on a few other gantries that they have put up the structures to hold these things too, so expect some new ones popping up in the coming weeks

Thanks for mentioning this mate, very helpful, I'll pass on the message to local drivers.

For those that don't know, it is this style of camera.

There is often a post with 3 cameras on a 100 meters or so before the gantry too.

Are these cameras shooting regardless of whether or not there is a speed limit indicated on gantries?

It's part of the Smart motorways right? I think the cameras are only active when there's speed limit in place.

I have no idea. Feel free to drive by one at 95mph and let us know ;-)

I'm 99% sure that they are only on when a reduced speed limit is posted

I go round the M25 from 10 -19 regularly and do 85/90 and haven't had a ticket yet.

These ones are active all the time I believe as a few weeks back I was blowing down the M25 towards Kingston from Heathrow, no variable speed limit in force, and I got 3points and £100 for doing 92mph

Bollocks, that's my commute ruined.....

What is it with civil servants...... Only a very small proportion (probably non car drivers) that are in favour of speed cameras - makes my blood boil!

In that first photo of the two devices on the bracket off the side of the gantry, the outer one is the camera and the inner is the flash. I currently do about 80 miles a day on the M25 and have seen these being triggered a fair few times, even if no variable speed limit is displayed.
I've also been 'reliably' informed by a traffic officer that all of the speed cameras on the M25 are on all of the time but I don't believe that tbh. It all seems pretty random to me.
Nowadays, if it's dark, I just set the cruise control to 72!

Yes they are active all the time but from reading 'apparently' each photo is taken at the moment on it's own circumstances as to the road conditions and traffic congestion etc so not always a guaranteed fine/points out the back of it.

They also say that these will potentially be set so that the current tolerance is removed too, so anything over 70 for example could warrant a fine/points.

That's the old cameras mounted on top of the granty. They are only on when the speed limit is active

There have been rumors that the new cameras aren't quite as leniant. They are side mounted and can do all lanes with one box. These have only just been installed. I noticed that there is another set already up today in a spot where old cameras live too. Looks like the old gatso boxes are being replaced with these things.

So long as you know where they are you can do whatever speed you like. Do 90 past them at your own risk though.

This gantry now has new style cameras going southbound. They must have been installed last night as they werent there yesterday morning - https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@51.54.../data=!3m1!1e3

As does this one at the M4 bridge - https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@51.49.../data=!3m1!1e3
This is actually a new camera location as previously there were no cameras here.

You basically do the exact commute I do. Where do you work? Staines, Egham, Feltham?

Other thing to note is they don't require the lane markings to verify speed either.

There's a set over Leatherhead / Reigate way too, anti clockwise. See them go off all the time.

Don't know about the M4 cameras, but the same ones on the M25 are active all the time, but the threshold is set quite high when at national limit.

Good post op!

Hopefully all the GPS apps update soon and neutralise these little f**kers!

I see they are nice and covert. No yellow paint or anything like that.

Smart motorway my ass. It's all about screwing the motorist.
