Warning Light Trifecta (ABS, DSC, and Brake)

Hey guys, my 2009 335D threw all three of these lights on at about 75K miles. Looking online it seems like I either need a new ABS pump or a wheel sensor.

I have tried to diagnose these with a BOSCH and a C310 code reader. The problem is I couldn't get any codes out of the Bosch and the C310 code reader will communicate with the engine but with the ABS system it gives me a "communication error". I tried the c310 on a friends 2006 330i and it worked fine.

Any help is much appreciated.

It would be great if you get it scanned with a BMW specific tool to get the right codes. It will greatly narrow down your potential causes.

I had this happen to me at 75688 miles. In addition, cruise control stopped working.

I used Carly app and got the following code:
ABS / DSC / Brake: Dynamische Stabilitaets Kontrolle / DSC
Steering angle sensor
Code: 5E46

I went to my dealer, they found the steering angle sensor lost its calibration. They recalibrated it (for free). Now, a month later, it is still OK.

Thanks guys, Yozh the C310 is suposedly a BMW specific code reader but doesn't seem to walk to talk with my diesel. The Carly might be a good idea.

montr I'm guessing your vehicle is still under warranty. The BMW dealer here charges $169/hr so I try to avoid them if I can.

Yes, my car is under extended warranty.

If the problem is the steering angle sensor, there are instructions on the forums on how to replace. If I remember correctly, it is a $500 module. For the calibration, apparently you can do it yourself with TOOL32 and a OBD cable.

Typically if its a wheel speed sensor it will only throw an abs light. if its a pump or steering wheel sensor it will throw multiple codes. like you described.
I can give you step by step instructions on how to check the wheel speed sensors if you need. Depends on how mechanically inclined you are..

Thanks glitdi!

Being a mechanical engineer I like to think I'm pretty mechanically inclined.

As for checking the wheel sensors, I would think that if I can get a code scanner that will actually talk to my car it would rule them out or point me to the right one.

I'm starting to suspect the steering sensor since noticing my cruise control is not working.

My drivers side ABS sensor went recently which threw all ABS related codes; DTC, ABS, FTM.

Is it intermittent or continual.

If it's intermittent; disconnect each sensor in turn and see if it throws the code permanently.

Follow up on this. I purchased the Carly BMW adapter and app that finally allowed me to pull the codes from the car. Running the scan I got a 005DC2 Right Rear Speed Sensor, great! So I purchased and installed a new speed sensor then cleared the codes. The lights went off and I took it for a test drive. I made it about 500 meters before the lights came on giving me the same 005DC2 code

I'm not sure where to go from here other than swapping the rear R and L speed sensors and trying again...

Hey guys, following up on this. So I finally had a dry Seattle weekend to dig into this problem.

I read that a damaged wheel could potentially cause the 005DC2 error and that wheel has kissed a curb so I tried swaping the rear wheels and clearing the errors. No dice... I still got the 005DC2 error (right rear speed sensor). Next I jacked up the car and swapped the right and left rear wheel speed sensors. Beyond all logic the error did not follow the sensor or reappear. It has about 70 miles so far without any errors (fingers crossed).
