Rims have a mind of their own...

I've had these rims and was wondering if anyone else have the same problem. The car is fine with the stock tires, but when I drive with my 19' 235 fronts and 265 rears the quality of ride diminishes.

You know those roads that are worn in and have sunk where major traffics usually runs? Well my steering sometimes jerks into those grooves and often have to drive with taking real care of how I drive.

Also sometimes at speeds of 60-80kms the wheel jerks or shakes... anyone have any suggestions? Do you think I should get them balanced again? Or is it possible they are warped?

How do I tell if their warped? There are no weights on any of the rims? Help...

well, my 19" compared to the 17" runflats ride almost comparably in terms of road feel and noise. you said the the car pulls or "tramlines" on certain road surfaces. this is common with certain tires or if they are really worn down.

if your wheels are not truely hubcentric, you might have a problem with it vibrating the steering wheel at certain speeds. some wheel manufacturers make the centerbore 74.1 to make the wheel adaptable to most makes of bmw, whereas most of the current bmw's are 72.6. i'd try getting hubcentric rings that are hubcentric to your wheels or if you still have the boxes, it should indicate what hub bore the wheels are made.

good luck!!

Thanks for the feedback... getting some new rubber this spring after the snow melts. But in most cases the wheels should be weighted right?

In worst case scenerio how would I know if one rim is bent?

Put it on a scale, then you can tell.

This is one reason I thought I might get 18s on my next time around because it doesn't matter how new your rubber is and your rims are probably fine, but the ride quality always goes down (in my opinion) with 19s and wide tires.

Bimmerboy- when you said put it on a scale wouldn't that be the samething as getting the wheel balanced by a reputable company?

When I first bought the rims I didn't think it would affect the ride to much, but having a staggered set-up with 19's might be to much!

When you get new tires this year they will balance the tire and rim together. You may have a bent rim, or the weights that they use to balance may have come off.

I have a vibration with my 17" OEM with my winters. I was told I have a bent rim (which I knew about) but the vibration only occurs at speeds above 100km/h. When I'm on my summers (18" M5) I feel no vibration what so ever since they are balanced and to my knowledge (knock on wood) free of bends and dings.

Hey SLK, I don't think your rims are bent or anything.

19 inch rims tend to feel like that. Especially since the roads in Toronto are terrible. I had 19's on my other car and it was pretty bad, same thing you described.

People in the states all have 19" rims since the road is normally fairly flat and sometimes the rare occasion of pot holes.

I use to have the pully back and forth feeling in my run flats. But I have winters now and it feels good.

Thats why I am planning to go 18's so I have 1inch more of rubber on my tires, thus giving a more comfortable ride.

Makes sense... If I had known I would of been looking for smaller rims, but they look so damn good in 19's!

It sounds like your car is tramlining. This is common and fairly normal when going with wider wheels and tires. However, you mentioned your wheel jerks and shakes at 60-80kms. This is not a normal occurrence. It's very very rare that none of the wheels have weights. Most likely your weights fell off and you need to get them rebalanced.

I highly suggest you find a shop that can road force balance your wheels and tires. Most, if not all, BMW dealerships have the equipment to do a road force balance. They can also find out if your wheel is out of round.

In short, the tendency for the wheels to follow those grooves is normal, but your wheels jerking and shaking at 60-80km is not. Be sure to get them rebalanced, it would be ideal if they were road force balanced.

I also heard putting (nitrogen or something like that) in your wheels are better than just regular air.
