DIY Dinan-style CAI V2

Last June I made some changes to my OE intake system: 1) Installed the RM silicone throttle body intake hose in place of the OE corrugated plastic intake muffler, and 2) Fabricated a proof of concept bumper inlet CAI, similar in concept to Dinan. The power gains far exceeded expectations. I posted results here:

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...ight=dinan+cai

This week I installed the Performance Aero front bumper. Since the front end was open, I decided to re-visit the CAI, update fitment to the new bumper, and attach an aerodynamic flare to the inlet mouth to reduce air turbulence. I had planned to increase duct size from 2" to 3" but the larger duct won't ft. Although I'm temporarily stuck with the old 2" corrugated tube, the new length is less than half the old, and the flare inlet adds significant cross section to the intake.

The first thing I noticed is a significant ~ 15 degree Celsius decrease in coolant temperature! My normal coolant operating temperature is right around 99 deg C, + / - a few degrees. Even in the summer, at the track, temps rarely rise above 103. The lowest temps I remember are in the low 90s. Today the coolant hovered around 84 deg C. The ambient temp today is 54 deg F.

The car feels strong. No dyno numbers yet.

Does intake Temps effect coolant temps? One way to check the airflow is to check MAF voltage or Air intake temps with a data logger. Can't wait to see the new numbers!!

That boy good. Clean install. I put a small mesh grill near the inlet of my dinan style intake just for insurance.

Edit. Thinking about it and location I wonder if you could install a y pipe and have a scoop to cool brakes?

I was wondering too. If ambient temp is colder, I suppose that will decrease both IAT and coolant. But I don't see a direct connection between IAT and coolant temps other than ambient air.

Mea Culpa

MAF was disconnected...

Coolant temp is back to normal @ 98 / 99 deg

Car doesn't feel as strong as before.

Hmmm....rich basemap + leading our due to intake = a bit more power? I'd reset adaptations and driver her hard.

Good suggestion. Will have to take her out for a spin this weekend.

Reviving this post.

Did resetting the adaptations help at all? Strange how the disconnected MAF led to cooler water temps.

I'm planning on using my msport bumper with the cooling ducts in place feed the factory air box. Don't know if it's possible but I hope to get both pass and drivers side plumbed into it (the air box). Drivers side shouldn't be a problem but I don't know about the passenger side.

Hmm, this is rather interesting! Also curious to know why the disconnected MAF yielded cooler coolant temperatures? Was the 86 degrees C constant or fluctuate up and down a bit while driving? If so, what were the highest and lowest temps that you saw?

Coolant temps have zero to do with IAT. Your readings have basically nothing to do with the state of your mods, but are merely a reflection of what the DME is doing with the mapped thermostat. Coolant temps up to 112c are completely normal.

I was able to fit a 3" from my airbox, down into the fog light area. You have to slightly oval the hose where the rail/headlight is but it fits.

You can also order the snorkel from the Dinan kit separately. I bought mine directly from Dinan for $30.

I looked on the Dinan website but could not find the snorkel for sale by itself.

Can someone point me in the right direction?

It was discontinued.

DIY versions are documented online. Here's one:

Dinan will sell you one if you call and ask, it's about $35. I was going to buy a new one (I have the duct attached to the brake cooler, and the tube) but it does not work with the Msport Bumper. So make an offer and it's yours.

We can certainly assist with another snorkel and hardware.

The snorkel is part no. D762-0066 @ $27.88.

The complete hardware kit is part no. D763-0035 @ $19.90.
I'm sure prices could change- etc, but that gives you something to go on. FYI - this WILL NOT work with the Msport Bumper (E92). The way the brake ducts are shaped and how the bottom intake scoop line up will not work.

Looks like the thread is turning into a parts offering.

My airbox will be available for someone. I used my stock N American airbox for proof of concept testing with the Dinan-style snorkel. It has a hole pre-cut for a snorkel hose.

Since I picked-up a Euro performance intake recently, I'm going to use my Euro airbox again. I plan to add another snorkel, too.

If anyone is interested in the N American airbox, send a PM. The charcoal filter is deleted. The benefit is not having to cut your own hole.

Also, a nice way to experiment on an extra airbox without worrying.

Sorry for the hijack my man!

Dinan style CAI V.3

Resurrecting this thread from dead.

Just arrived this week, a 3" diameter CF tube to replace my prototype Lowe's special shop-vac corrugated hose. We can all do the math, but the increased flow area is visually significant. A bonus is the light-as-air weightless feel. Will install after motor and transfer case mounts, and new brakes.

I am very interested if this actually helps air flow. I already have the brake cooling ducts so i could just tap that.
