there is a thread on extended warranties in the maintenance section. My personal suggestion, is save the money in a savings account that accrues interest and spend it as repairs are needed. Extended warranties are priced so that on average they are profitable, meaning, that most people never re-coup the cost of the extended warranty. I have a 2011 335D that is near the end of its factory warranty. I plan to self warranty.

Best warranty should be extending your current with BMW before it expires.

I feel your pain 6K is a lot for a warranty, heck I was quoted $3500 for my 335d 7yrs/100K platinum. On the 335d the quote was too much money for a car that is generally reliable other than emissions equipment failures. Edmund's listed the total 3 year repair average for a D at $2500.

If it was me, I'd take the 6K you have an use it as a down-payment on a lease of a new X5. I'd would rather get a new trouble free car under factory warranty for that kind of money.

If you think the car is gonna break and cost more than 6K in repairs in 3 years, I say dump it, if you worried about spending 6K on a warranty.

ouch, $6k is a lot of money but it's what you pay for x5 I guess.

to answer your questions in short, I don't think there is such thing as diesel specific warranty unless you do some fine touch up works.

I have added up my cost savings of not purchasing extended warranties and its well over $20,000 over the past 30 years.

Exceptions: camcorder (in use a lot during horse shows) and current wheel/tire damage coverage for the sport wheels. Both have been useful.

I try to take care of my fine machinery and believe that I don't abuse German cars as if they were all built by Porsche. It seems to be paying off for me to not get extended warrantie$$

Route 66

Search for it and you'll find plenty of good feedback/reviews. It's probably less than half of what BMW extension is. It can be purchased from most credit unions.

I have route 66 on the 3 series, its some ASC warranty basically - they're good just you need to call back a few times to cover something they didn't initially -

with diesels, the easy street (bumper to bumper) doesn't cover emissions ... and its that *hit that fails basically

You can only get paid interest in a savings account if Texas requires a passport and a visa from all the other 49 states.

X5d is less prone to CBU compared to 335d. Of course many other things can go wrong besides emission related problems.

No, it's 3.0% interest on your balance in your checking account. With a limit of 15,000 and you must have direct deposit and perform at least 6 credit card transactions per month (any size) to qualify for the reads checking account interest rates.

Seriously there are lots of banks and particularly credit unions that off high interest checking accounts.

My savings accounts pay a lousy .75% interest but you can do better.

I personally keep 4K in my car repair fund for fixing the bimmer. I think if I do the deletes as needed and an egr block, I highly doubt this car will cost me more than 3k in repairs

I am not sure how your bank can pay 3% in interest when the borrowing rate for them is way lower than that.

$3k in repairs? Once a year? Once every 5 years? How many miles do you drive average every year?
Are you new to the brand?

Rewards checking accounts make money by recouping merchant account fees, hence the requirement for credit card purchases. I see these deals all the time and have multiple banks to get around the account cap. I own a business and most consumers don't realize that every credit card transaction comes with merchant account fees. Credit card companies charge on average 3.5-7% per transaction. Reward cards charge higher percentages. It's why some stores give a discount for debt transactions

There are banks paying 5% on savings accounts.
http://www.cnbc.com/2015/05/11/rewar...-to-5-apy.html

I'm suspecting that between years 4-7 which a typical extended warrenty covers, I'll spend less than 3k on repairs. Which would be less than the 3500 I would pay for an extended warranty. I plan to self maintain the car, if you had to go to the dealer for everything, then an extended warranty might make sense

Check Edmunds true cost to own for a repairs estimate. Most cars will take less in repairs than you'll pay in an extended warranty. They are rarely a good value except maybe on a BMW.http://www.edmunds.com/bmw/3-series/...1/cost-to-own/

Most dealers try and just charge more for the X5 because it's a "5" not a "3" even if they are talking about replacing the exact same part (engine). Although my X5 has more gadgets inside then my 335d did...... So it makes sense the warranty would cost more, but not double the price...

If I remember correctly, I had 16 injectors, SCR tank and all emission components, CBU cleanup, pulley, belts, swirl flap, etc, etc. All were cover by the original warranty or the BMW extended warranty. Also, I had free loaners for months at a time. If I add the time that my car was at the dealer for repair, it is probably over 6 months. I guess that if I add up all the repairs and loaner, it is easily over $15K.

I paid a little more than $2K for the extended warranty.

There are also a lot folks who have taken the m57 engine over 100k miles wou no significant issues, read about it on bimmer fest. If your car is well maintained, iunless it was made badly it's not gonna break. Extended warranty helps if yours is failure prone. The forums do not represent most m57 owners, just a select few. The failure stories you see here are only a small minority, most folks when their cars run right don't complain.

I'll add I have a 2011 335d, no significant failures, 1egr valve and cooler, and windshield washer pump. That's it in 43k miles.

Please define "well maintained".

Do you really think having only 43k miles on your car makes it reliable?

Just wait till you pass 50k.
