My first spin of my Open element Air Filter project

Well had some fun today on the lathe. Made a coupling piece out of aluminum to fit in the stock air inlet, that deletes the MAF, and holds a 4" inlet AFE progaurd 7 air filter. Surprisingly it somewhat fits in the bottom portion of the stock air box. Which is nice cause it utilizes the ram tube feed cool air at the filter. At some point I will probably remake some sort of air filter box/shield thing, probably out of carbon. Then depending on how that goes and the space I may have, I might try to make a new air inlet pipe out of carbon.
Only got to drive it around the block, but I was surprised at how little change in noise it was. Once you get the LP spooling though, you can hear it well, but it's not loud at all.
I can only upload one picture at a time for some reason. If someone knows what I'm doing wrong there, please let me know.
Thanks!

That upper end is not important, stock air filter is good at least 600hp.
The problem is in the other side, its diameter is only ~40mm.
It is quite easy to get it => 63mm (2,5")

I'm sure you are correct, but what about the huge step on the inlet of the compressor housing?

If we were to do what you have done, by puting a hose on the outside if the housing. it appears that that huge step being exposed now to incoming air would provide a lot of turbulence, and would result in not so good air flow?

Hi
You are right, but.
That is very easy to fix.
Make a suitable "ring" there.

It will work, but it is a little small for 600hp.
More importantant is the passage into the box.
Also, the MAF is a bigger restriction than the air filter.

So, shnaggs is working on the right stuff.

Intake is definitely restricted on these cars. I just wish there was a more practical way to improve it. I run a filter minder in the airbox and it pulls down over halfway on a new filter.

I saw this as well with my filter minder. You might find this thread interesting. I was able to modify the stock airbox intake bottleneck issue and fix this. I show several progressive steps to getting there...

Bob, I saw very similar power results with removing the intake restriction. Several stepwise measurements and progressive power improvements shown here (from the same thread above):

Red Line The stock air box removed and no filter.
(I have a dyno video I will upload soon to the youtube.
Hey that looks nice! Thanks for sharing.

looks like my efforts might not be all for not!

Maybe i'll have to draw up a program, to run a few in the cnc lathe

Certainly sounds delightful

Surprising how much power it picked up!

Interesting. Is the MAF delete approach to keep the MAF connector plugged in, but the unit is pulled out of the intake tract? Or can the MAF unit be completely disconnected and removed?

Bob asked when we had the car on the dyno to try it with the maf plugged and unplugged.. I'm sure he will chime in in regards to this

Bob,

I was under the impression that your tunes eliminated the MAF?

That's why I made the piece. In driving my car after this mod, I left the MAF unplugged, and did not notice any running issues or CEL. But then again, I only drove it around the block and didn't get the Floor it at all.
