are you leaking coolant at all? how many miles are on the car? I definitely wouldn't start or drive it anymore until you can get a reputable mechanic to look at it. You don't want to over heat it. Good luck OP.

Sounds like a water pump failure. A blown head gasket would not shoot smoke out from under the hood, but steam from the coolant passing by the reservoir cap would. Now, driving a few minutes to park in an overheated condition is probably not good and could damage the engine (by warping the cylinderhead - BMW I6's are known to not like prolonged periods of overheating). You only choice here is to two the car to a reputable BMW mechanic with BMW scan tools so he can scan the car for trouble codes related to the event, which most likely are water pump trouble codes.
Take some time and search on "water pump" under this sub forum and you'll learn all about the WP failure. Good luck with it.

A manual transmission can be set to "comfort", "sport", and "track" modes simply by the technique and speed at which you shift it; it doesn't need "modes", modes are for manumatics that try to behave like a real 3-pedal manual transmission. If you can money-shift it, it's a manual transmission. "Yeah, but NO ONE puts an automatic trans shift knob on a manual transmission."

You have overheated the engine when the waterpump failed or a coolant hose broke. While a head gasket leak was not the original problem, you may have destroyed other components when the car overheated. Previous posts have noted this as well. The smoke was coolant steam and a broken hose is a good possibility, but it is also possible that you over-heated and over pressurized the coolant system and the excess pressure vented through the coolant system cap (designed to do this).
Tow it. Check for a broken hose or bad water pump (check the codes). Refill the coolant and purge the system of air. Look for any other obvious problems under the hood like coolant on electrical connectors, etc... Clean up an spilled coolant that may be causing electrical problems. Sorry to tell you this, but a competent mechanic evaluation of the car is recommended to assess additional damage like a blown head gasket.
