Water Pump Change?

Has anyone had to change their water pump yet? If so does it require a special tool? Mine is not out yet, but I'm at 100k mi. so I bet its time. My wife drives it alot and would rather change it early than have to retrieve the vehicle from 200 miles away. Incidentally I recently had my intake off after 25k miles if alphabet delete and Jareks tune. The inside is clean.... oily a little as PCV is intact but very washed clean. I had an indication of #1 glowplug bad but it was the controller.

Yes, last week.
$1300 at the dealer. Less than $300 in parts.

I planned to do mine in both cars but, they're not a common failure item. I decided to wait until the weep hole starts to drip. I did have the belts changed though. It was cheaper to have them changed then to buy belt stretch tool

umm which water pump? What failed that caused ALL of that coolant to leak from below? The mechanical water pump would have had to be leaking there for days to leave that mess. Was it the aux pump? Hose? Any pics?

You made the comment that it "sudden death", which is extremely uncommon in any vehicle make.. Our mechanical pump is NO different than any other pump. Was it the auxiliary pump? umm?

LOL Funny comment. I have quite a few post on other forums there Major. FYI-I've been turboing/ making quite a bit of power with BMW's before you had any idea what a Roundel was. I bought my diesel for a reason, which has nothing to do with the previous owner, there issues or a "deal" as you insinuate... Hang out for a bit and you'll see why as soon as track temps warm up.

FYI- before your complete display of ignorance, I was actually interested in buying your car. Too bad.

Best of luck with your sale and your Toyota. If you have any other pompous remarks, feel free to PM me and we can discuss without muddying up the forum. Oh, sucks you paid $1300 to repair your water pump. lulz

Guys I just bought another 09 with 45K miles. It has really really bad CBU and its taken apart, but I got the car for $5500 and its clean. After I tune it and do some deletes, I will have a cheap beater with a stage 2,5 for a little over 6K and some sweat. I can't figure out how CBU got that bad so fast, but I guess wrong oil or crap fuel? Anyway I'm ordering a mechanical water pump for my '10.

Just to bring a little clarity to this thread. 335d's only had a aux water pump in the early model years, 2009 I think was the only year. Also had a slightly different transmission in 2009 as well. So since he has a 2011 335d, it was the mechanical water pump that failed. As for how it failed, his pic showed a major leak, other then that just guessing on my part.

Seriously, I'm quite the DIY guy so I'm not scared of problems if they arise, coming from working on TDI's of various years and 800hp mitsubishi's, not a stranger to the game

With pictures the pump failure is pretty clear. In the old days (E46) I would just change the water pump for the fun of it (OK it was for PM). Taking the belt off was the hardest part, the rest took less than 10 minutes. The older models were designed to be worked on. Today, they are trying as hard as possible to make service a dealer only thing. Heck on the 335D, I can't even SEE the water pump, no less get to it to change it. Now if the average life of the pump is over 200K miles (not 60K as in the E46), I might be OK with it.

I think I have one more fossil fuel vehicle purchase in me. After that, it's going to be electric.

I wouldnt say its obvious, could be a small leak at a hose whipped all over by the belt, or a burst pressure tank, or.... Its obvious theres an issue for sure.

Why doesnt the coolant look blue in any of those pictures like it should?

When a water pump leaks, its typically at the shaft seal. The little hole in the bottom of housing is there to let the shaft seal leak out so it gets noticed. I'm speaking in generalities here as I don't know for certain of the 335D/X5D water pump housing has a hole like this. Only other places it could leak are the block seal and/or hose connection. Neither of those type of leaks is cause for changing pump.

Hooper
It happened while driving. Steam came out all of the sudden. Pulled over in a parking lot immediately. I had my Torque on as I was monitoring a regen. No increase in coolant temp, more than usual that is.

Coolant was splashed all over the engine bay. Together with dirt from the engine it had a grayish color up on the towing truck. When the truck driver got it off the truck it started dripping more, you can see it in one of the pictures.
The dealer diagnosed it the following day as a broken water pump. Nothing else. 100k miles.

Preventative maintenance item maybe, just like the harmonic balancer?

Yea and if you have a wife who's a moron mechanically speaking, shes more likely to turn on her windshield wipers from the leak than pull over.
