Anyone hear if the recall is going north of the border as well? Presumably the same airbags were used for the models sold here.

More airbag issues.

Where is the VIN info, or is it all 2013-2015's ?

Thanks for that. At least at this point in time our 2014 X1 is not part of the recall.

I wouldn't say that any X1s are in the clear right now, as it only was announced yesterday and I can pretty much guarantee that BMW cannot update their website vin check that fast.....

So the included cars are from the following generation vehicles:

E90, E91, E92, E93 3/M3
E82, E88 1/1M
E84 X1
E83 X3
E70, E71 X5/X6/M

Not all vehicles of those types are necessarily a part of the recall, but if your car/truck is involved, it will have one of those chassis codes.

As a result, note that if you have any current generation BMW (Fxx) then your vehicle is *not* affected.

Surprising that it applies to all E9X generation except the E92/3 non-M. I wonder why?

Checked my VIN through Dealerspeed (BMW's internal website - as I work at a BMW dealer) and I've got nothing listed as of yet.

Usually when a recall is made - there is a compelling reason. I wonder in what way the airbag is defective.

IE: does it not deploy? Is it a intermittent issue where 1 out of 1000 doesn't deploy? Is it a delayed deploy, etc?

You'd get the new airbag internals, and maybe a new center cover (where the BMW emblem is), but that's it.

Why are Takata airbags being recalled?

The driver or passenger front airbag inflators of certain vehicles could produce too much pressure when the airbag opens. This may break the inflator and increase the risk of injury. Poorly inflated airbags don’t provide maximum protection, and broken inflators may propel sharp fragments towards the driver or passengers.

This defect is more likely to occur if your vehicle has been exposed to sustained high humidity and temperatures for long periods of time. Since these conditions typically do not exist in Canada, Transport Canada considers the risk to Canadians to be low.
