How can I find out if my car has a tune already?

I recently bought a 2011 335d M-Sport package. I already owned another 2011 335d Sport package, which my daughter drives.

She and I both noticed from "butt dyno" that the M-Sport car seemed to have a little more power. But we know that those two cars have the exact same engine.

Today I downloaded DashCommand and attached to a Wi-Fi OBD device which reads engine information and reports "live data" to the app.

Anyway - the point: From a dead stop and a WOT, I got a measurement on the app of 345 HP and 478 ft/lb torque. And I know this engine is only 265/425.

So has this car been tuned? Is the app just wrong? How can I find out what ECU version is on the car and if it is stock or not?

thanks in advance for all the expert information I'm about to get.

If it has a piggyback device, remove the 5 allen head bolts and lift off the engine cover, you'll see the device plugged into the Fuel rail pressure sensor which is on the front of the motor near the EGR plumbing.

If it has a full software tune but retained stock emissions, that would be difficult to definitively prove. Perhaps call BPC or JR Auto with your vin number and ask.

Thanks much, Mark. I was definitely more curious about how to detect an ECU flash/tune rather than a piggyback. If the app is right, I don't know of any piggybacks which would advance the HP all the way to 345 other than the Maxchip Tunning. Will look for the piggyback, thanks much.

All the piggy back tunes should do about 300-310whp or potentially about 330-340 crank hp. Which incidentally are where most of the tunes would also place "crank" with stock emissions.

None of the piggy backs will put down 345whp however.

Larry, you live in my home town. My man. I grew up on North side and went to UTA. Moved down south in 1988.

Cool beans !! I graduated UTA in 1989. Left TX 1996-2012 and now back "home."

Someone with a tuned car or a stock car should be able to tell pretty easily by comparing to their own. The HP/TQ difference between stock and tuned is reliably detected on the butt dyno.

Try doing a few 0-60 runs. That will give pretty strong evidence as a tune will drop that time by close to a full second if you have good traction, easily a half second.

1.) Run the DashCommand a few more times in your car. Can't really get good information unless its repeatable.
2.) Run the DashCommand in the other car and view results. If this results in same numbers then your app is off or both cars are tuned lol.

See what your max boost is. That's a big clue.

Another run later this afternoon shows 352 HP and 507 ft/lb torque. Very curious. Will test it on second 335d tomorrow or Saturday.

do them both at the same time - one right after the other using the same route. A trend will best present itself with most variables eliminated.

Might be a little late to the party but check the dde (ecu) , if it looks like some monkey has tried to pry it open and its all marred up its been tuned! Pretty much imposible to split them open and do it so it looks like its never been messed with..

I would question your app also. Like has been stated by me and others. Try to simulate the same test/scenario with both cars. You need repeatable data to make any conclusions.

That high of hp would likely mean no DPF. Look down there and see if DPF is there and/or if the DPF was gutted. Use one of those telescopic mirrors. If you don't have one, get one as they are so helpful. I'm trying to give you a lower labor way. Pulling ECU out isn't hard but you will need to remove the cowl and the white ECU compartment cover. If you pull ECU, make sure to snap all of those connectors back down securely when replacing.

Agree with dixy on boost pressure check. I finished at UTA in August 1988, B.S.M.E
