Changing out BMW Performance struts to Koni?
My 330i came with an eibach pro kit, and the bmw performance suspension (installed by PO). While it handles great, I'm at the point in my life where I would be willing to give up some of the performance for a softer ride.
I ditched the runflats, and I did cut down my bumpstops some time ago, and it did improve my ride (see here; http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=836365 ) but the wife is getting to the point that she doesn't want to ride in my car due to the stiffness of the suspension. What would you guys recommend with the eibach pro kit? I'm seeing Koni Yellow mentioned quite a bit- will they be comparable to a stock sport or regular suspension? Would my performance suspension be worth trying to sell to pay for my new setup? (Shocks still look and work fine after nearly 100k miles). Thanks for the info

You can not have Eibach and BMW performace suspension at the same time. Also no strut/shock will make it ride better while on eibachs. Koni FSD maybe but the yellow most definetely won't. Replace the Eibach spring with BMW sport or performance springs and install Koni FSD.

Not sure if you can get BMW yellow performance springs to fit a 330. I have that combo on my 335is and I find it to be a great all around suspension for daily driving and occasional track time. Much better than OEM Sport suspension.

So you feel the yellow performance springs would be softer than the eibach prokit? Do they have any drop compared to the sport springs? Thanks again.

I don't have photos, but dropped about .5" in the front and maybe .75-1" in the rear.
Car handles bumps better and does not bottom out like with the sport suspension. There are a few reviews on this site. Should be able to get them from Tischer. |

I don't think the performance shocks cause much harshness. I used them on my 135i. The performance shocks are likely to be worn after 100k Miles and they won't be as firm as when they were new. I don't think they are the main cause of the harshness.
To make the suspension softer I would get rid of the Eibach lowering springs, and try to get some OE M-sport or stock springs and also the matching OE bump stops that are intended to be used with them. You will need to give your VIN number to the parts dealer so they can search their database for the correct OE parts. You could get the yellow performance springs from BMW, but they won't be any more comfortable than the Eibach pro-kit. |

I'm going to see what the M-sport springs would run me.

Shocks at that age would be a good step, too. I'm thinking Bilstein B4 which is a stock replacement shock at an incredibly reasonable price will help you out.
I'd prolly ditch the lowered sport suspension altogether. You could buy the bilsteins and stock regular length springs for under $500 all-in. This will be a very well riding suspension while not being sloppy. Later, if you want more performance add a sway bar. Happy wife, happy life. |
