DPF options? Replace/Regen/Remove?

Hi All

My DPF has less than 2K miles left on it according the onboard stats, so I am now wondering what route to take.

The car is a 2005 E91 with 135k on the clock. The child in me says remove and remap but will remapping a car of this age/mileage be asking for trouble? Does a remap but extra strain on the engine/transmission? (Yes, if I drive it like I stole it I know!). I guess I could just remove without remap.....but wheres the fun it that?

As for regens, do they work? Or will I be doing this again and again?

And as for replace, its just down to price, I have seen some people buy them online from Germany for a lot cheaper?

Cheers in advance
Al.

Reset the OBC and ignore.

The onboard thing is just a mileage based countdown. It bares no relevance to the actual state of the filter.

The car regens the filter by itself, every 2-300miles.

It will likely continue working for a good while yet, so long as your car is healthy, the thermostats are working, has no fault codes and gets driven properly on reasonable length journeys.

Its when these things go bad, that DPF issues usually arise. As if they're not right, the car cant regenerate, and the filter becomes blocked.

My OBC warning was on when i bought the car at 138k miles. I reset it and checked the filter stats with some diagnostic kit, it was all fine. 10k later and no issues thus far.

As Aragorn30d has said, the most important thing is to make sure its still doing a regen. I don't have diagnostic stuff, but I had the error on my DPF (and a fault code that meant it wouldn't regen) took it in to get looked at and it hadn't done a regen for 4-5k miles.

I ended buying a second hand DPF because I didn't want MOT hassle. Hopefully yours is still doing a regen on longer runs so you should be fine, but definitely get that checked.

I was in the same position with my 06 e91 at 120k. The car was running fine and had covered 20k miles a year from new so I thought the dpf must be in good shape. I reset the dpf on the dash at 120k and everything seems fine and I've now hit nearly 170k.

Great advice and another factor for the ECU to allow for a regen is above 1/4 full of fuel I believe
