325i Spark Plug changed. Help please.
Tackled the 06' 325i Spark plug change DIY, Car starts fine no warning lights or anything...
Slight problem..The torque wrench I got was kinda cheap (Harbor freight) I set it to 265in lbs torque but I don't think it was correct so I basically hand tightened it to what I thought was close to when I unscrewed the old plugs out... What are some problems that could happen with the hand tighten? How do I know if its not working . |

How to know if it isn't working - The results of your job shows immediate misfires upon starting the engine.
Problems of Hand tightening - Cracking the spark plugs and the crackles fall into combustion chamber. Or screw in too tight and it seizes. Yikes. You don't want those problems; at all. So careful on the hand tightening.

There's a wealth of info and experiences in the DIY-Changing spark plugs on e90 330i thread. Torque values are important for certain things, but less important for others. Where I do feel that it is important for us mere mortals that only do the odd DIY, is that it is a guideline so that we don't either over-tighten or don't tighten enough. There are lots of mechs that are so used to tightening things that they can tighten by feel and have no problems at all. When it comes to things like torquing up head bolts, then yes, torque values and torquing procedure has to be followed.
With regards to spark plugs, unless you have gone wild with your wrench, it is probably fine. I actually replied to a question very similar to yours in that thread a bit earlier - I remember fitting Bosch spark plugs and the torque spec was 28NM (dry) or finger tight plus 90 degrees. And when I tightened according to 28NM on my torque wrench, it was coincidental exactly that, 90 degrees past finger tight. Now with the Bosch plugs and the crush washer this is fine, but I am not sure if it the same for NGK or whatever spark plugs you fitted. Hope this helps. |
