Thoughts on this?

I don't normally post much on here but wanted to get peoples opinion on this...

I was coming home along the motorway and keeping up with traffic when the car started to vibrate a bit, initial thoughts were the wheel had thrown a weight and was out of balance but it slowly got worse.

Pulled over to check for a puncture or anything obvious but all tyres were up to pressure. Wasn't too far from home so decided to to nurse it back home.

Got her on the drive and took a look underneath properly, that's when I found this...

The tyre is 5 months old and I definitely didn't hit anything in order to cause this sort of damage. I checked with the company who I purchased it from and they are happy to send it back to Goodyear as see if they can get my money back.

Tyre is a Goodyear Asymmetric 2 from the rear on an MV4.

Jesus Christ there's a Tyre bleb and then there's that! Glad to hear you got her home safe and haven't caused any further damage, i.e arch etc!

Was it defiantly brand new or was it a re-mould? Correct size tyre?

Wayne.

Yep, definitely brand new, bought from 'Tyres on the Drive'. Standard size too 255/30/19.

It'll be interesting to see what Goodyear come back with. So glad there was no further damage... although I decided to replace the front tyres whilst I got this one done and found a bloody crack in one of the fronts... so it's going to be an expensive month!

That's a serious defect, never seen anything like this before to that extent. What is the date of manufacture of that tyre as marked on the sidewall? I would say it's either a problem with Goodyears quality control, it's from old stock and past or close to its shelf life and should never been sold let alone fitted, something not right where or how the supplier stores its stock. Take pics and send them along with the suppliers info to Goodyear before it goes back get the ball rolling from you and then char it personally once it's gone back there has got to be some compensation from good year if it there fault.

Only other thing I can think of they were the incorrect loading or not the XL reinforced if your BM needed it so the wall bead popped as it has.

DOT marking is 1114, so around March 2014... certainly not what I'd call old stock... XL rated too.

I've taken loads of pics, including the rim to show there's no damage to the wheel that would have caused it to go like this.

As well as the obvious problem, your tyre has another issue. I know this because two almost new Good Year F1s of mine showed the same problem and I managed to get a partial refund from Good Year following a technical examination of the tyres.

If you look at the central tread band, you will see that it isn't flat but has a stepped ridge that's appeared. This gave rise to a high speed vibration that took me ages to find (after alignment and balance checks and all bushes examined).

My advice would be to make an official request for a manufacturer's examination via your retailer (which on a re-read I see you are doing).

+1, I haven't had any issues with any of my Goodyear tyres although I haven't noticed whether they had that central band or not.

Tobeski, glad you are safe as that tyre looks like it is on the verge of exploding. Imagine losing the rear on a motorway, better than a bursting front tyre I suppose

Wow that's bad.

Do you do a lot of miles? I know it's not easy to tell in photos, but they look well worn for 5 months old :O

Well Goodyear clearly don't think the ridge is acceptable - hence my refund. The central tread band is flat when new...

It's done about 10k I think... but now you mention they are older than 5 months... fitted in May last year (5th month... schoolboy error)

Tyres has been posted off to Goodyear today, they've agreed to investigate based on the photos provided. I'm not really expecting any comeback, but we'll have to see.

Back in the days when I had a ford mondeo ST with 18", many people had to stop using goodyears due to the fact the tyres were failing. It was a well known problem within the ford scene.

Hopefully they will be fair with you on this as it must be in the manufacture.

Fook!

Can you post some pictures of the tyre wall showing tyre info.
What country is it made in?

these tyres are manufactured around the world. Goodyear say, they are not all for use in every country.
I.E. They maybe called Eagle F1 and have eurpean markings but are made to a different spec!

That could have been fatal.
I'm about to change from winters and usually use F1's but that's made me think, look elsewhere.

I'm glad no harm came to you.....

Loads of people run goodyears with no issues
I wouldn't be put off by one example of a failure.

I must admit I haven't checked my tread pattern but my car has started to develop a slight vibration at 70+ since I had Goodyears put on, I know it could be a magnitude of things but started very soon after the tyres were fitted
