Catback exhaust mounting

Iam sure many of you guys can answer this.. I was wondering how a 2.5'' DIA aftermarket exhaust can connect onto the secondary catback with only exhaust clamps since the OE DIA is 2.36''. Is the section behind the cat a little larger or close to 2.5''?

The reason I am asking is I traded my aftermarket exhaust for a borla catback. Unfortunately he got rid of the secondary cats and used a straight pipe as a filler while welded it to the borla midpipe. I live in CA so its important for me to keep the cats for smog. I think the best way to go about this installation is cut the OE exhaust and use the exhaust clamps. This way its much cleaner than welds. At the sametime, I dont see how a 2.5'' can fit a 2.36'' at the connection.

Borla comes with 4 clamps, 2 for the axleback and 2 for the midpipe. Even this doesn't explain how it can connect between 2 diff diameter pipes. Am I missing something?
