Clutch creaking - outside/under car, any ideas?

Happens when I push in and release the pedal and sounds like a squeaky screen door. Can't hear it with windows up and clutch otherwise operates normally.

From searching seems it may be the throwout bearing, anyone have any experience with this?

Most likely throw out/ release bearing. Try to listen when engine is off. If sound the same, it's the bearing

Hi Dmak, thanks for the response.

Yep, same sound engine on or off, coming from underneath the car/firewall.

Seems like it's one of those things you live with until you need a clutch huh?

I would disagree. My car does have a similar noise. The noise is from some part of the release mechanism, pivots I am guessing on the hydraulic slave, or perhaps the pivot on the throw out fork, or bearing mount.

If the throw out bearing itself was gone it would be noisy (rumbly or screeching) when the clutch in pushed in with the motor running.

Yes. You are correct. Most likely one of those you said. Release bearing does slide on the transmission housing tho, so can really be any of those. But at the end of the day. Transmission will need to be remove for the repair.

Looks like the slave is actually mounted to the transmission housing in the diagrams I can find. As Dmak says, looks like tranny needs to come out for any fix so it seems like I just wait until the clutch itself needs replacing.
