Mr5. Intake Install Question

So I installed the Mr.5 Intake last week and a have a couple questions about the installation.

First of all, the placement of the second filter. Did you guys have to take out the little (for lack of a better word) "air duct" that goes from the front of the bumper to the wheel well, which is I assume to cool the breaks? I couldn't get the filter to fit without removing that. Any negative side effects by removing that?

The black plastic cover in the bumper with the same mesh pattern as in front of the FMIC, is half open (the part where the air duct was installed) and half closed. Did you guys somehow open or cut out the closed side? Or did you leave it half open/half closed?

Also by removing the air duct, there is a hole in the wheel well. Does that matter with regards of water going into it? Or did you plug it? Would plugging it further reduce the air cooling on the breaks?

I pieced together a guide from two different guides on how to install it, but for some reason neither of those guides covered this part.

I am running Mr 5. I remove the fog lights on my car since I also have an ER sport oil cooler on the passenger side. I removed the brake ducts since they do nothing. I also have the open square in the fender liner and it doesn't cause an issue.

Why do you not just put the air filter behind the fender liner and above the ducting. I had room to do that and it worked fine. There is plenty of cool air back there and trying to have cool air blast on to the air filter by removing ducting for the brakes so that can take place is not necessary IMO.

You know what, I didn't even think of that. For some reason I thought it had to be a cold air blast. I might see if I can make that fit. I already modified the piece of plastic that's in front of it (to open the right side), but it may still fit either way.

Awesome, thanks. That's good to know. If I can't get the air duct back then this will be my setup too.

It utilizes the factory intake but adds the equivalent of an open element cold air intake into the system. In other words it allows more air to be available to the Intake tract allowing the engine to pull more air in. It is a cold air intake located in the fender well but using the existing airbox as the routing point. The system allows you to keep the factory box but also get the effects of a cold air intake. Unlike dual cone underhood open element intakes the argument can be made that only cold air is being pulled into the system which in theory is better. It has been shown however that a dual cone intake pulling hot air from under the hood can perform as good. Likely because the air ultimately is pulled through a hot turbo which in many ways negates the cold air argument. I personally like the idea of cold air intake and the factory look that is why I did the Mr 5. Also it works as good as most any other intake and is a fraction of the cost.

I wouldn't consider a DCI expensive. They can be had on eBay now from any brand.

You are correct about just doing a dual cone intake only, very inexpensive. Probably about the same price as all of the parts for a Mr 5. I spent $135 for all of the stuff and you can get two cones from Burger for under $100 for an N54. I was really referring to a dedicated intake which would be in the $300-400 range that would be similar in function to the Mr 5/

Noise does get annoying from time to time, especially with the cowl off. This would be a good mod if you had a full silicone inlet.
