No 1st Gear Wheel Spin - WHY?
Hey Guys,
I want to see what everyone else experiences in their 335d. I CANNOT for the life of me throw down enough power to burn out in 1st gear (straight line/not turning) !!! With all this torque I cannot believe this is possible. I'm even running JBD at 75%. I do have good tires but even with the stock tires I couldn't even get it to trigger the traction control. PLEASE NOTE I AM TALKING ABOUT A STRAIGHT LINE. Whats everyone else experiencing? Possible need for CBU cleaning w/ no CEL? - never been done before 60k Miles all replies are greatly appreciated |

Try brake boosting. Also you have to make sure traction control is disabled; pressing it just once doesn't fully turn it off. You have to hold it for a few seconds and you'll get a different message on your dash, I believe it's a circle inside a triangle. Once you do that, hold the brake (you can be in auto, sport, manual mode) press on the skinny pedal and slowly raise your foot off the brake and you'll be smoking your tires easily. Have fun

It's not a "muscle car". The power delivery is more refined, also the throttle response is reduced for emissions purpose, and I'd go as far as to say safety reasons. A proper tune or even a sprint booster improves the off idle throttle response.

Even with traction control "fully disabled" it isn't really. There is a e-diff that kicks in and modulates the rear brakes so if one rear wheel starts to spin it brakes in to send power to the other wheel that isn't spining. Kinda puts a damper on things.

Even if I leave the traction nannies on, I still see the triangle/circle thing with summer tires on and below 50F. As yozh says, with nannies off and wet, you better be ready. She turns into a loosey goosey. I have stage 2 JR, illiterate (that means she forgot her alphabet) with open exhaust, no meth.

I dont really lose traction *much* in first gear in a straight line, but it does happen at times. Definitely depends on the road surface as a really rough (but not bumpy/full of potholes) surface will keep good traction but a new smooth blacktop surface will be easily overpowered. My power is going through 275 section Michelin PSS's though, the stock runflats were easily turned to mush. The stock tune definitely has first gear reigned in quite a bit.
When you turn DSC off completely, there are no braking or other traction aid left on. You can get quite squirelly with DSC all the way off. |

i have a new-found appreciation for the traction nannies and a very healthy respect for the torque that the car now generates

http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=719012 Ive had some skid pan time in the d with full dsc and traction off and learned some respect for the nannies in wet conditions with all this torque available. |

Tires make a big difference too in the spin capability.
My daughter's 335d has DriveGuards and it spins pretty easily. My 335d has MPSS and it's much harder to get mine to spin. |

No, I haven't looked. I do know that at the track my car won't let me do more than a very, very brief brake stand at the line before pulling power. Was interested if implementing some of the coding in that link would eliminate that problem.

I never really tried stock, but tuned this car punishes the rear tires. There is 2 loooooooooong dark black stripes in front of my house that make me smirk each day I see them. As already stated, hold down the traction control button until you get the second disabled notice. Happy Driving!

So strange that this seems to affect some and not others. I wonder if BMW decided, for whatever reason, that some option group would also have this not active. I can take a look later tonight if I have time, pulling the coding list is pretty quick work.
