Since the water pump is on the passenger side of the car, and there is no duplicated labor, there is no sense in doing the jobs together.

My pump started leaking at 83000m (133 000km) and was still running but needed to put 1 liter of prestone every 2 days. So it's really up to you !

I have no first hand experience with this, and there can be multiple reasons why it happens, but the original pumps can last a long time. Once you replace the original pump, the replacements seem to fail on a regular basis. Some have claimed that the reason behind this is that the replacement bolt is too long and bottoms out before the pump is tight enough on the block and causes cracks, or the new plastic is thinner than the originals and that is why they crack. Either way, there is no synergy to doing these two jobs together.

Just wait til it fails. Sucks having it loom over you when it's inevitable, but there isn't a real "end of life" mileage range when they fail. Mine went at 47k, others have gone less, and others have gone over a 100k.

I would replace wp and tstat asap. With 80k miles your now entering barrowed time. You don't want it to fail and leave you stranded late at night or in a crappy area far from home or with a passenger. There is no labor overlap with ofhg, except for maybe the coolant won't be spilling all over your hands during the ofhg install if you drain the coolant to replace the wp first.

My thermostat went out at 140k. Water pump was still running strong. Wait until it dies

Most would consider this maintenance since thse pumps have a tendancy to fail much sooner than that. When they do fail, you're stranded. So unless you don't drive far from home, I would think it's prudent to replace it. Mine failed around 105k. Fortunately it was only 20 miles from home, so tow bill wasn't TOO bad. Needless to say, this is now on my maintenance list for 80k miles.

+1, it's easier to do than the OFHG too. Hardest part is just getting to the screws on the hose clamps, because they are conveniently turned such that they are impossible to access (at least they were on my car)

It's not so much mileage that causes these pumps and thermostats to fail, but how well the vehicle has been maintained. If the vehicle is 5+ years old, and the coolant has not been replaced, its going to cause certain coolant components to fail sooner then if the coolant has been commonly changed. As coolant ages, it becomes acidic. Meaning, it will start eating away at components, instead of doing its job of preventing corrosion throughout the cooling system. That's why you see certain cars with build up in the cooling system. It can also cause the plastic and rubber components in the cooling system to either swell or become brittle. Making it a weak point, and at some point cause a leak.

Not necessarily. Some, mine included, simply cause a leak aspart of their failure. I was nursing mine for probably 3 weeks before I did the repair.
