Im finally getting to the point of having time to do my valves. I bumped my starter last night and watched the valves open and close. It appears to me that the valves are either closed, open halfway or fully open with each rotation of the engine. Can someone verify this for me ? I did not have any solvent to pour /spray in the intake to see if it would puddle at the moment. Thanks

I think I always saw 4 closed / 2 open at a time - I even had carb cleaner soak in and it didnt go down on the ones closed, was pretty easy to figure out

Mine are pretty gunked up, so am I correct in seeing only two valves when looking in the port ? I would not be able to see the exhaust side correct ?

You can only see the 2 intake valves.

You'd need to take off your turbo and look through the exhaust ports to see those valves.

If you have over 35K miles without a cleaning, you're due for sure.

gotcha, guess Im just overthinking it. My first blast so I just want to make sure. All in all really simple job, I was just a little thrown off when 007e350 said he saw 4 closed and 2 open. I get it now. So can I assume that I can blast all the ones that are closed at once and then the leftovers ?

yep! just be REAL sure their closed, walnut lock would be very very bad!

Maybe he was referring to 1 bank of 3 cylinders.

But there are only 2 valves per cylinder on the intake side

Found this in a quick google search : N52, N54, N56 – Twin cam, 4 valves per cylinder, produced from mid 2000s to current (US)

Cylinder numbering is from front to rear; 1 at the front and 6 at the rear.
Ignition firing order is 1-5-3-6-2-4.
Engines produced through 1995, are generally considered as having one bank (bank-1). All cylinders are bank-1.
Engines produced from 1996-on are considered to have two banks (bank-1 and bank-2). Cylinders 1 through 3 are bank-1 and cylinders 4 through 6 are bank-2.
