WG rattle - lateral play in actuator arm fix?

Hey guys,

Just wondering if anyone has ever tried anything like this to permanently fix/ reduce WG rattle?

I had a look under my car on the weekend and only found play laterally rather than in and out. This play was at the actuator arm itself.

https://www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-...ip/06j145220a/

Above is the fix that Audi/VW has for K03 turbos on their cars with the same issue. Does anyone know if this part may fit our TD03's?

I've just purchased some new E clips that I hope to put in the gap to reduce/ eliminate lateral play.

The actuator rod is attached to the actuator arm through an E clip, which I've taken a pic of.

PS: new boost solenoids coming soon and already replaced some of the vacuum lines (this did reduce the rattle a bit )

Hey mate, I've seen those fixes! I believe that naynay's fix is directed more to lateral play, whilst Timot's is more to do with in and out play (actuator arm adjustment). Given that I don't have any in/out play, I don't think adjusting the actuator rod length would achieve anything...

I was just wondering if anyone has ever tried this fix before? I've just ordered a clip and will give it a go when it arrives... Think it should help considerably

FYI the part I ordered can be found here:
http://www.aliexpress.com/item/For-V...999.261.ibfRCA

$5.32AUD delivered compared to $50USD+P/H for basically a replica

I have a feeling a spring will be the only helpful thing here, unless your E clip (circlip) is flogged out. Even my new Hexon turbos had lateral movement in them. When i need to i will just use a spring to add some load to the actuator rod

I should have described this a little better - I've found play between the actuator rod and the hinge it is connected to. Basically there's a small gap between the hinge and the e clip when I wriggle it. I think that's what this part is designed to fix (hopefully). Might have the same effect as applying a spring, but will apply less stress to the actuator rod directly?

Actually surprised so few people (if any) have attempted this on our cars. Seems to be the go to fix for Audi/VW with positive results every time!

No worries. Then yes it may possibly fix the rattle. Also, you can always get another E clip and shim it down to fit in there too.
Just remember it may not fix the rattle as you will more than likely have play between the wastegate arm and the rear exhaust housing, thats where my last turbo's had play and rattled like a mofo, but a simple spring fix may sought that type of rattle out

Yeah that was what I was gonna do originally! Then I came across this fix when searching the web generally. Have you got pics of where it was rattling exactly? I'm hoping this will be the cure-all for me. That might be wishful thinking though

The images in the first post are of the rear turbo! I didn't find accessing it from below too difficult at all. It's the front turbo that I can't directly see. Is that accessed from underneath with the splash trays removed? I followed the vacuum line to it with my hands from above but that's about it.

Mmm I'll give the rear one a go first and take it from there hopefully most of the issue is to do with the rear!

Only real fix for lateral movement is to replace the wastegate bushing:

The bushing has gone oval shaped and theres excessive play in the flapper arm, causing mad rattles.

For longitudinal play you can adjust the flapper arm, but you'll never be able to adjust the front turbo without removal.

Hey Vince, I've seen that vid before! I'm not convinced that the play I'm seeing is from the bushing itself, but rather being contributed by a looser fitting between the actuator rod end and lever (there the e clip locates). Hence, I'm hoping this Audi/VW fix will help

There is no way you can access the front turbo actuator, I adjusted my rear turbo actuator arm/rod and my rattle disappeared by 80%

The front turbo needs to be removed for what you want to achieve unfortunately

My actuators had in/out and laterally play for what it's worth

How's the spring fix holding up anyway? Did it completely eliminate rattle?

Mint - got some pics and links of the exact springs you purchased?

Following on from the TurboLabs DIY video, I spotted this reco kit on Ebay. No idea if it is a legitimate or cost effective solution...
