M4 Going

Ok, so the boyhood dream of a owning an M3 (4) was not what's its cracked up to be. I guess living in central London is not the best arena for such a car but that aside I was really expecting more for £60K's worth of kit.

Yes, its fast but you cant, not in a million years get the power down and my mates 335D xdrive will ruin me from the lights every time, even in decent weather.

then there is the cabin noises, the thing is so highly strung that even in its most gentles settings its still so rigid and thus everything squeaks and rattles which just takes me to the edge

so I guess my load will be well and truly shot buy the time I sell this. but will be looking at a 3/435d xdrive in the very near future

Thats a real shame mate!

I've noticed people are slowly starting to favour AWD over the classic RWD setup. Real sad to hear!

Absolutely fair enough.

I don't know why people are racing at lights though.

More fun between 60-150mph.

Even fiats abarths can do decent 0-60s now.

Fully understand mate. I lived in clapham for 2 years. Even outside of London there aren't many chances to use the power in cars like those without the risk of some blue lights and more £££ out of your pocket...

I still want to go 750whp on my 335i

I've not ruined the car with super stiff suspension yet.

I will never be happy.

Is it the noise of the body and suspension then?

As I know those cars use the silly active fake engine noise which you can disable.

I know exactly how you mean which is one of the reasons as to why I got rid of my E90 M3. Whilst it sounds and looks great, all of the power is in the mid to top end and by the time you reach there, well, you are going pretty fast!
A fantastic car and pleased to say that I did own one

But the fact is that a 335i just seems much more manageable around town.

If an M4 is too much for central London, surely a 3/435d will also be a bit overkill?

I have to agree about 335i around town. Yes the mpg still isn't great but there is something about it. Saying that a 330i would still do the job well.

I can take on the 335d just with a tune on the N54, don't understand how M4 would lose to it.. If your having traction issues put some suitable tires on there

Don't think I've ever heard anyone say they don't like their //M. Fair play to you for being honest!

Around town, a diesel deffo isn't the answer, I wouldn't have thought. You should probably go for a 430i / 440i. That way you have the power, but also the comfort.

I've got an e92 335i and to be honest, it's nearly perfect for what I need - it's powerful enough to put most normal cars to bed, is *relatively* economical, considering what it is, and the drive is really comfortable - especially now it hasn't got RFT's on it!

2 cars ago I had a fully tricked up e90 335i, which was just the best car I had ever had, properly loved that thing. But as with a lot of BM's of that age it was stolen from my drive without a trace, probably some cheap ebay bit of tech jamming the locks etc.

I am sure most of you have either been in, driven or owned an M car but for those who have not the experience is a completely different deal all together.

when you sit in them and start them up you fell like you should be sitting on a race track, you feel like you are sitting on the deck and they are noisy. the problem is that when we watch Chris Harris and the like reviewing them, they are usually on some circuit in Spain with tyres like glue going sideways in plumes of smoke. on that basis we go out and buy a junior super car, an M4 has the pace of an F430 !

I don't dislike the car, if I lived on the Nordschleife it would be a great daily driver, but for the pot holes and traffic of East London, its just to hardcore

^^ Totally agree. I had an E90 M3 and got rid of it for the very same reason! "Real world" driving you can't beat a straight six 3.0L twin turbo diesel......

I don't agree. I have an E92 M3 and it is a more comfortable ride than the tuned 325i MSport I owned before. It is really easy to drive moderately. It is also really easy to switch on the animal. It is no noisier that the 325i I had, except:
  • When you floor it, but what you hear is music
  • Hard breaking

I also don't see how you could get whipped off the lights by a 335i. Maybe swap cars with your mate and see what happens.

I have not driven the M4 so I can only compare with an M3 E92. Some would say the M4 is just a 335i with an M badge.

I said I got ruined by my mates 335d xdrive

having had both a 335i and an M4, I can confirm they are different animals for all the reason I have mentioned above

I'll even let you fill the m4 up before i collect it.

If you want a traffic light racer buy a Tesla?

That's a pretty sad car ownership goal though.

I'm fairly sure my old 335i was faster at the lights than my M (although far less comfortable at putting it down); but how many times do you actually get to do that and have some decent road ahead of you? All these cars are designed for carving up A/B roads, not doing a 200m stint.

Maybe you'd be better in an GolfR/RS3 or even the new TTRS which is sub 4s to 60.

Car ownership in London is just a status affair. All you saddos sat going nowhere while I whizz past on a bike with half a horsepower ;-) If you aren't going to take it out of the city why bother having it?
