USB Socket power from glovebox
Hi, I've got a 2009 E91 LCI Business edition.
I recently fitted a new dash cam that I've powered using the USB socket in the glove box. Everything seemed to be working as it should. Today I thought I'd try and hide away my iPhone charge cable and rather than using the cigarette lighter I used a USB splitter and connected it along with the dash cam to the glovebox port. As soon as I plug the cable into the phone it knocks the USB power off. It hasn't blown a fuse as it eventually works again after unplugging it all and leaving it for a bit. Is the port overloaded? Are they just not capable of charging phones? Any ideas anyone? Thanks

I've noticed BMW's USB sockets are not meant to charge phones on their own. They provide a very low voltage, and if it even does charge your phone it will take forever. They have their accessory cable that plugs in your arm rest console for that reason. I am talking about the y-cable that goes to the USB and AUX. I made my own little switchboard in the coin tray with a heated seat button relocation kit. I have 2 rapid charging USB ports, and a mute button for my radar detector hard wire.

Your install is great, overkill for what I'm after but good work.
I don't have a USB in the arm rest only AUX and cigarette lighter. Is there a way of hardwiring a charge cable in or another USB that'll supply enough power? |

I already have something using the cigarette lighter with USB plug and can't be arsed with keep messing with cables, that's why I wanted to use the glovebox one.
Can a USB socket be added into the fuse board somehow? |

You could piggy back off the fuses in the glove box to power any accosory... plus this would be tidier than using your cicagrete lighters to plug in USB’s.
For a guide to the fuses I used to power my dash cam please see the link. It will show you which fuses I used for constant and switched power supplies. http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...ash+cam+wiring |
