Sticking/stuck brake calliper
So driving home I heard a squeal that sounded like it was coming from the rear off side. I checked the wheels and the rear off side brake disc was seriously hot whereas the near side one was just warm. I left everything to cool down, jacked the car up and took the wheels off. The near side spun relatively freely but the off side was hard work to move!
My mechanical knowledge isn't great compared to many of the fine members of this forum, but it seems to be a calliper issue to me. I have the comprehensive Mondial warranty so callipers are covered unless it's failed due to wear and tear. If I didn't have the warranty I'd take it to my new indie but I obviously need to go to BMW because of the warranty. I don't fancy taking it to BMW (Cooper Thames Ditton is my nearest) to be told it's wear and tear and get hit with a big bill. Do callipers just fail? My car is a 2008 335i on 72,000 miles. |

They do. But i've never had a successful warranty claim for one. Never tried with BMW Warranty though.

To be honest, they're not that difficult to replace yourself. Probably about an hour of your time and a new caliper (you can probably buy a refurbished one for the same amount as your initial assessment by BMW).
