Remove CIC from my 2009 BMW E90
Hello Everyone,
I've searched a lot may be not enough, but i find only post about retrofitting CIC, and upgrading to NBT. But Is there a way to completely remove the CIC (Idrive system) ? What will I loose? Will i still be able to play CD? Radio? Connect my phone? Has anyone done this? If yes, could you point me to the right direction or post. I know I'll loose the Parking sensor display for one thing, i can live without that, but what else? Thanks in advance Kaputme |

Key thing is to code the car to let the modules know the idrive system is not present so you get the option of services (CBS) to the cluster.

Is it not possible to just remove the Idrive (screen), Controller (replace with no controller center console) and leave the Radio as it is? I use my Phone for navigation and USB for music. I rarely use the Idrive. |

Another great upgrade to consider is removing one of the rear wheels. It turns out that you don't actually need both of them most of the time, so removing one will save a lot of weight.

There are BMW's without Idrive running just as good as yours and mine. So why the one poke in the eye kinda reply.. If you can't answer it. and you don't know.. Just let it be... |

Why do you want to remove such an expensive feature? Even if you don't use it, it's pretty desirable. If you want to remove it, you will need to fit a new dash to take out the second hump. You would have to source another head unit so that you could play your music/etc. You would also need a new trim piece in the centre console to remove the iDrive controller. So much work to remove something of value. What an interesting post. What is the reason to remove this? Weight gain? Or simply because you don't use it?

You can't just remove the screen. Well you can, but you will have a gaping hole where the screen was, and there will be no visual to see what radio station you're on or anything.
If you want to replace the dashboard with one without the second hump, you will have to replace the head unit with the regular radio head unit because the iDrive unit won't fit in the regular dash. But why remove it unless you're planning to gut the car and make it a track car? Even if you don't use any of the ConnectedDrive features or sat nav, it doesn't cost you anything to just leave it there and use regular radio. I would cost you way more to retrofit non-iDrive hardware and you would be paying to lose functionality.

I'm not doing it anymore
After extensive research from past week and from all your suggestions i have come to realize I'll spend more on removing it than the money i get from selling the unit, not to mention the amount of time and effort.
I wanted to do this mod because i wanted a better screen, Touchscreen maybe. Have some WiFi facility when parked in the garage (Don't want to pay 180€ Every year for Connected services, the previous owner used it up so its dead not.) and some more music space. (don't have USB in center console so i am limited to the HDD) If there is a way to get WIFI it'll be awesome. Last edited by kaputme; 05-13-2016 at 09:04 AM.. |

Vendor Bimmertech also offers a unit that will mirror an iOS/ android device to your iDrive screen.

What is "WIFI in CAR"? Do you want to use your phone as a Wifi router and supply the car with internet service? What would the car do with the service? Web browsing with the CIC is pretty bad, and even worse if you remove the CIC. Would you modify the speedometer so that you could send/receive email thru it?

TBH just take out your phone. The iDrive is a terrible interface for the office functions or web browsing, especially if you're already parked.
