Jeremy Clarkson on Car Washing

I found this on Fark today and thought you'd get a kick out of it.

From this article in the Sunday Times:

Quote:
What a meaningless way of passing the time. You don’t wash your vacuum cleaner or your television set, you have a machine to wash the dishes and you employ a man to clean your windows. So how much do you have to hate the sight of your wife and children before you think, “I’d rather go outside into the cold and spend a couple of hours burnishing my wheel nuts”?
I don't know... I do *dust* my TV set from time to time, and if it were really dirty enough I'd probably think of some way to wash it

It amazes me, considering his occupation, how "little" of a car guy Jermy Clarkson is. It's comments like these that make me hate the guy. However, at times, he can be hilarious......

But really, how many car guys does anyone really know that don't enjoy the satisfaction of washing their own car??? I don't always have the time either, but the 3 or 4 times a summer I do, I love it. Clarkson really knows hot to alienate "true" automotive enthusiasts.

I would just as soon base my car cleaning philosophies on those of Kelly Clarkson.

I don't think I've ever seen a dirty car on Top Gear; I guess when you have a crew to wash your cars doing it yourself loses some of the appeal.

Was this on Fark or TF? If the former, I must have missed it.

The attitude is meaningless. Why wash anything? Why shower, or get your hair cut? Why mow the lawn or clean the house? It's silly.

he's a cynic, but a hilarious one at that. he's just lazy, as with the rest of the people who responded to his article. i can't blame them with the weather they get over there year round. probably makes car washing seem meaningless.

It was greenlit. Third headline down on Sunday.

As for the rest... there was one line that meant the article was destined for posting here:

Quote:
This behaviour is called “being a concours enthusiast” and it’s very dangerous. Many “concours enthusiasts” go on to be murderers.
I thought he could have done with better imagery ("murderers"? why not "axe murderers" or "serial killers"? must be that British dead-pan delivery...) but it still made me chuckle. Cleaning basket-weaves for Concours it definitely a neurosis of some kind
