Rant - Why do people stop on On-ramps

It ceases to amaze me when I am coming down a on-ramp to find a car completely stop when they have long merge lane right in front of them.

For months I have been encounter this person (a woman) in a older car stopping on the on-ramp because there are cars coming down the main road. We are not talking about lots of car, we are talking a few cars with 100s of feet between them and many times the cars are moving into the fast lane to clear the slow lane.

The first time I encounter her I almost slammed into her

, especially since I am come down the ramp at 60 MPH.

Well yesterday, I am following a fellow BMW down this ramp, at about 50 MPH and to my total surprised the person stopped, a complete stop and let the cars go by before merging. Needless to say I hit the gas and attempt to pass this person on the merge lane. Guess what they did, they tried to out accelerate me.. which was useless since they were in a 525i. Oh it was a woman again.

Why in the hell do thiese idiot stop on an on-ramps???

1) They don't know how to merge.

I actually passed a guy on an on ramp because he was only goin about 15mph and he was hanging on the far right side...like practically on the shoulder. I just kinda zipped by lol.

We... because of the cars we drive, expect people to be more aware and responsive in their driving. The average person, driving an average car to their average job doesn't care about "Spirited" driving (like we do). They get pissed when we use an interstate as our playground. If they would stay the hell out of the left lanes, we could play... but it wouldn't be as much fun weaving in and out of traffic. I'm kidding (a little).

i used to do that when i first started driving.... it took me about a week to learn my lesson.

Actually, when I first started to learn to drive my father yelled at me for stopping and told me, look at all the space you have!

Now I just freaking go all the way to the end to make my father proud.

I fly Helicopters and dodge 45 pound vultures (which are invisible until those last few seconds and unpredictable) at 130 Miles Per Hour... I think granny in her buick isn't a problem. I drive while fiddling with my GPS, picking my nose, reading my mail and singing out of tune to my radio. All while I'm dodging cars and looking for cops at 90 MPH.

If something as big as a vulture is invisible until the last few seconds and you are only doing 130 mph (not that fast) you probably need to get your eyes checked.

He never said it was a problem, it is an annoyance.

At least it is not like California where they have stop lights at the ramps. I did not know this nor did I look for them so I ran a couple.

Really Hawkeye ? You think a vulture is easy to spot on a hot hazy day with pollution particulates in the air while doing 130 MPH and scanning the sky for aviation traffic, handling radio calls, monitoring your instruments / engine gauges and looking for emergency landing zones at 700 feet? Try it sometime... get back to me.

PS: in my above earlier post I was screwing around... but I'm serious about the vultures.

I'd rather go up on-ramps faster than the speed of traffic because it's much easier to slow down to make a gap than it is to speed up to make that same gap.

Cars can brake much faster than they can accelerate. I don't know of too many (any?) exceptions to that rule.

Yeah that was my driving theory too until I got the 335i which I can accelerate faster than most cars.
