Stretch for LCI & N55 or settle for N54 and pre lci ?
Hey guys, quick back story. Sold my my08 335 not long ago, im getting back into one but want dct and the updated idrive this time around.
The budget at max allows for a late model N54 with dct and updated i drive. My problem lies in that for 2k more i can get into an N55 powered LCI, obviously better looks, better lights, bumpers, better bits and pieces and the N55, i know the N54 is the better performance engine, but i REALLY like the idea of no waste gate rattle and premature turbo failure hanging over ny head and i dont want to go crazy with mods. I love the LCI wheels too. Should i stretch even further with the rational that i wont have wg rattle issues w the n55, i like the wheels so probably wont ever upgrade those and obviously have an LCI which is better for resale ? I feel like its a no brainer but am still torn because i know im already going to my "sensible max" with the budget already. |

Get n55. It will cost you a lot less in the end
You won't have to worry about all the shit we worry about every time we even look at our n54 lol "Will the hpfp go today?" "Will the water pump die?" "Is it going to misfire?" "Are my injectors leaking?" "Will it throw a cel today?" "Am I going to make it home?" "Will this piece of shit even start?" Lol none of that Spend the extra money and get LCI |

Haha so the up! didn't cut it hey? Good to see you're coming back
![]() The N55's are making pretty decent power these days and sound great! but a well sorted N54 that has been maintained should be great also ![]() |

I'm hoping that eventually something like MHD will come out for N55 and somebody develops XDFs for it for proper flash tuning. As soon as that happens, I'd be very happy to step in to an N55 and an upgraded turbo.
If power is no biggie for you, go the N55. Just note that the turbo is tiny and the top-end power drop-off happens even harder and earlier than it does with the N54. Where do you draw the line though? How much more is it for an F3x 335i over a DCT E9x 335i? Last edited by bradsm87; 06-13-2016 at 07:29 AM.. |

Water pump would probably still be an issue as with all BMWs I don't think they made it much better for updated generation. |

N55 has a better interior also, the black trim on the doors buttons and steering wheel doesn't flake off.

Hahahaha I've had an n54 before and did the full set of injectors, coils, sparks, water pump, ofhg, ect. So would be nice to avoid that again. I loved the engine but think ill go n55, just need to find the right example within budget.
Btw the colour is bluewater, stil dont have access to the vin just yet. |

My n55 does not misfire but its idle fluctuates baaaad, it feels like it has a vacuum leak. Let's take those off the list since that shit hasn't changed.

I have a N55. Waterpump and thermostat broke. Charge pipe blew up first month of owning it. Changed all sparks, coils, fluids, filters, was tempted by power so added fmic, cai, jb4 - had stalling issues, rough idle and half cel reduced power mode (DME failure error code). Took jb4 out, reduced problem frequency, updated the software at BMW dealership, reduced it even more, reset the 'adaptive values' (well bavarian engineering did) - hasn't missed a beat for a month today.
Moral of the story, you'll still spend money!! Don't get an n55 expecting Hyundai maintenance costs. Also don't get one with the ugly 225m wheels like I did |

I dunno why I thought the N55 had a belt-driven water pump. It must be the B58 that I was thinking of.
The N54 and N55 have the exact same part number water pump. It seems the N55 is not the water pump reliability upgrade I thought it was. |

Pure turbos have an upgrade for the n55, the only thing the n55 is missing is a MHD type flash solution with the amount of new tables they have discovered, and are still discovering.
But once this comes, it'll be n55 all daayyyy! |
