I'm not for sure, but I believe they make their App to only work with their specific adapter. Probably just a money maker for them. I went ahead and bought the Gen 2 to have definite connectivity and to be sure there would be little chance of error when coding.

You can buy and use others, but being cheap is not worth it in this case. When you get knock off adapters you will have connectivity issues. Which technically, it will work. But I don't think its worth 25 bucks for that kind of aggravation.

I have the elm adapter and the official carly v2 adapter. The carly adapter is so much more reliable and can code F series which the elm cannot and my elm also couldnt code the module to get rid of the seatbelt chime.

I have a generic elm327 that has partial functionality in carly. I also have the carly v2 bluetooth which works well.
I find torque's interface vastly preferable to carly's, and I only use carly for things it does but torque doesn't. I haven't had any success in forcing dpf regens even withe the carly adapter and the full paid app. It gave me some message saying my model was unsupported. I have a 2011 335d USA |

It is simply marketing; forcing end users to buy the latest V2. If anything, there should be a trade in program or some sort of discount for the current V1 owners. I don't know.. I remember paying close to $50 for V1. I have seen the V2 go for as much as $70. |
