Intro / Intercooler review

Hi everyone

Been a long time non contributing lurker on the forum.

Just gone done installing iaknown's helix core intercooler kit in my car and have been really happy so far with the results! The stock intercooler/red boost hose like many of you was leaking, however in retrospect once i got under the car to take it off, realized how bad it really was, i'm not sure it was sealing much at all. The instructions were clear and easy to follow for installation, and only minor trimming was required which a 30 dollar dremel made quick painless work of, minus the hot piece of plastic that got in between my safety glasses which wasn't so painless. The hardest part of the install was dealing with the raining down of dead bugs and sand into your face trapped in the radiator and other crevices. While its possible to do the install alone on jack stands, thankfully my wife helped with the process to make it go a bit smoother. fitting the hot side silicon hoses involved a bunch of swearing, but overall the fit/finish is great. Iaknown was awesome to deal with during the purchase process and overall just a really helpful guy.

I purchased my titanium silver 335d m sport back in 2013. I have experienced all pain of owning this car ( weeks at the dealer diagnosing rough idles, cel's , CBU etc. ) and like many of you beaten the crap out of several loaner cars to help fill the void when my car was gone. Before i owned it, I had searched for an m sport for about a year and one ended up appearing right on my local dealers lot which i basically bought the day i saw it.

My mod list was fairly conservative at first - ST coilovers, AG m510 wheels, Conti tires, JBD, mtm front chin spoiler, and some led angel eyes Had CBU FSB done at around 50k+. and can't forget to mention my recaro infant seats. cosmetically i had the front bumper repainted and license plate holes filled.

I was bored This past long new england winter so decided to take things up a notch, suspension was upgraded with m3 control arms in the front, ecs two piece rotors, hawk pads, Megan rear toe arms, burger cowl delete. My exhaust got rusty and fell off one day, so i decided to go with a stage 2r tune from andrew/jr . I wasn't satisfied with the full exhaust options available during the time period i wanted to get the car done so I decided to instead work with a local fabrication shop to build/install the complete exhaust and downpipe but ultimately its tig welded stainless 3" dual exit, only 2 sections including downpipe, non resonated with no 2 bolt flanges.

Car is running better than it ever has, especially with the new intercooler and no boost leaks, no dyno numbers yet but probably in the next week or 2 now that the intercooler is in. I haven't done any track time with it , but its a fun car to take to shows, and drive, and see the puzzled looks on peoples faces when they think a Boeing is landing in the parking lot.

Welcome Ryan! For someone with only 4 posts, you have traveled way up the learning curve already. I look forward to your participation. I was tempted to buy petey's used IC that is same yours. You have stage 2 race from JR. This used to be called Stage 2 with deletes( I verified that a week ago). We are running more or less same setup except you have the way nicer IC and I still have stock IC.

I'm contemplating switching from stage 2R to stage 2.5R. Talking to Andrew

Yeah i BB_cuda was torn between 2 and 2.5 and still may end up upgrading along with methanol but wasn't positive i was going to do the IC etc. at first so decided to be conservative ( as if a theoretical 300+ 500+ whp/wtq is conservative )

haha yeah iaknown finally here, i got lazy and didn't want to take my car off the road again to do the install because i was enjoying it so much

Welcome. I'm running the same intercooler on my TiAg 335d as well. Did you go for the ATM core?

Can't believe what a difference it make expecially on warmer days.

Yup forgot to specify it is the atm core unit, with the hard pipe/adapter option. i have modified enough cars at this point to know to just do it right the first time

Only have driven it maybe 20-30 miles since install, so haven't had a lot of really hot days yet, but my posterior dyno tells me the car is much more "eager" than it was before. That could be due largely in part to the failing/failed red boost hose, but overall its a much more efficient design. My only regret is i didn't do a dyno run pre-intercooler post tune to see any difference. I do have a dyno sheet from pre CBU cleaning and jbd to 95% so should be interesting to see the difference from that.

I just installed the Wagner unit which had been sitting around for a year. Wish I had seen IA's IC... I would have gone for that instead. Reading your post it occurred to me that perhaps it is not so much the new intercooler giving the car a bit more power but the fact that all the hoses are now tightly cinched.
