Tick, tick, tick, tick BOOM!

So, last year I posted a thread about this odd ticking noise that began when I had an issue updating the firmware of the JB4. Car was running perfectly fine, I updated the firmware, then it wouldn't start. One of the cranks sounded so awful, it sounded like something ceased and stopped everything immediately. I eventually got it to start long enough to throw a CEL. Got a misfire on a couple cylinders so I replaced two coilpacks. Once that was all set, the car started, but sounded awful and the exhaust smelled weird. With much communication back and forth between Steve from Fuel It and Terry from BMS, I adjusted some settings on the JB4 and took a few logs. Car felt pretty normal, logs and fuel pressure looked normal, except for this awful ticking sound that I couldn't pinpoint. Since all the vitals seemed fine, I just continued to drive it as many people have reported similar ticking sounds with no issue. I regret not taking this in for a closer look. Flash forward about 6-7 months back to January of this year. I was in cruise control, had not even boosted once during the drive and POOF. Cloud of oil everywhere. I pop the hood the next day and saw shards of metal. I was in the process of moving from Austin, TX to Boston, MA and decided I would just take care of it after I moved. Well, I got it in the shop, new donor motor was installed as well as Spec Stage 3+ clutch, Spec SMFW flywheel, new OEM turbos, 335is mounts, new belts and tensioners, oil cooler, VRSF inlets, etc. Just wanted to share the story as well as a few pictures of the carnage.

What happened. Doesn't sound like a jb4 issue.

Not entirely sure. Looks like a hydrolock, but it happened in cruise control in vac.

Long block? Yeah, I got a 66K mile one unfortunately. I only have 49K on the clock, but I couldn't find one for under $5-6K that was a 2009+. I paid $4,200 shipped for mine. Included everything except for the turbos and accessories. But, I went ahead and replaced everything else anyways I guess. Nice find though man, wish I found one for $3K!

While I don't have personal experience, SMFW are known to create more noise than DMFW. IT does seem louder than normal, but also not terrible.

Yeah, but three main drawbacks of the DMFW is that it costs twice as much and is much heavier and cannot hold as much power as a SMFW. The cost is some chatter, however.

Hmm. Seems like you somehow hydro locked, bent rod, drove for a while and it finally let go

The car was running great aside from that ticking sound until the moment this exploded... It seems more sudden than that. When my car is complete, I am going to pull the head off the shattered block and see what kind of damage there is internally. I just don't know how the piston could be stopped so abruptly. I was thinking fuel injector failure or maybe that the timing chain skipped during my initial issue trying to crank the car? I will upload the video I took when that happened.

+1 I couldn't touch that unless I wanted a motor with 100K on it.

That knock or ticking is not normal. Idc that people say it's not normal for a car to tick that loud. I have 97k and my engine has 0 ticking. Not even fuel injector ticking

100% man. Hopefully this post will light a fire under someone's ass to just have it at least checked out before they end up spending over $9,000 in repairs like me.
