Average clutch replacement cost
Just wanted to know what people have paid to have a clutch replaced by an Indy recently.
I'm in the NYC area. Car is '09 328i RWD, with 78xxx miles. Mileage is seems low for a clutch replacement on this car, and it's my 4th manual, 3rd BMW manual. I think valet parking burned it up... ![]() |

I'm also interested in typical clutch replacement cost... I've heard that it's around 2k.
My car is at 154k miles, and I'm still on the original clutch. However, I very rarely valet it. It's seen a bit of track time, but I'm always really careful about not going to crazy on slipping the clutch about 2k RPM. |

Sorry about your issue!
I don't have a choice NOT to valet either. Otherwise I would NEVER valet my car. It's the new employee parking where I work, and this will go on for 18months due to a MAJOR $5 Billion construction project. |

Think it was around $1200 with new flywheel, at 130k.
You may not need a new flywheel and that'll be cheaper |

Had a fairly reputable shop do mine for $800 not including the cost of the clutch kit/fluids.

Thanks for showing the dealer charges though. I'll definitely NOT be going through them.
Valet company knows of the issue and should be calling me today. |

I think you should just try to call few reputable shops as well as dealerships.
Dealerships would be able to give you a good quote since they work by the book (which tells them number of hours job takes). The difference between dealership quotes most likely would be due to their hourly rate and the cost of parts (mainly markup they have). The good thing about going with the dealership is that everything is covered by 2 year warranty. Once you obtain information on how long it takes to do the work by the book, you can estimate labor cost based on the hourly rate that any shop charges. Most shops might give you a discount for longer jobs. When I was looking for a quote for an oil pan seal replacement, the quotes from the dealerships ranged between 1000 to 2000, so YMMV. |

If you are trying to get the valet parking company to pay for the clutch... good luck with that. $1,500 should be a fair price with a new flywheel.

If you can money-shift it, it's a manual transmission. "Yeah, but NO ONE puts an automatic trans shift knob on a manual transmission."

I just know for a fact they have several drivers who can't drive manual. I didn't want to be picky but I specifically asked if thy had people who could drive a stick. One supervisor even told a driver to get out of my car, in front of me, with: "it's a manual? You're not driving that car". Mine is not the only complaint from employees so far. Car is in impeccable shape, 78000 miles, had a nice low clutch engagement. It's actually my 5th manual, and I'm a 35 yr old married professional. Now clutch engagement is at the top of the pedal, and our clutches are self-adjusting.... So, I guess I'm on the hook for their incapacity to handle a normal/common car? I think not. Thanks for the idea on price! It's helpful to know what it goes for. |

Part is cheap. Labor is expensive.
Clutch replacements suck. I'm dreading the day when my clutch gives out... hopefully not soon.

Didn't plan on getting any. If the local Indy wants $2700 for a clutch WITHOUT flywheel....just imagine what the dealer would be. Same or worse. This is NYC/Brooklyn we're talking about here.
