"Inside the N52 Cylinder head" - short video with Dan Connor of BPC
Hey guys,
Dan and I put together a short video clip highlighting some of the N52's features, and inner workings that we've all been talking about lately. We started this thread to help give back some answers to the community about what makes this N52 cylinder head special. Thank you! John BPC Remember, Click 1080p HD! |

Thank you for this! Coming from a car that wasn't equipped with valvetronic or VANOS this has shed the light on how different this engine functions compared to traditional valve train/throttle body systems.
Knowing that this engine can run without a traditional throttle body why is this car equipped with one to begin with? Is it just for cold starts/warm up? Also do you think it would be possible to design a revised eccentric cam and accompanying intermediate levers that would give more lift/duration while keeping the OEM cams in place?

it's to develop partial vacuum under light load, and also as a failsafe incase of valvetronic failure.
Looking forward to watching this video later - it really is a clever system, and really isn't all that complicated, although there is a lot of moving parts (two rockers, two cams, springs, motor, sensor). |

it goes to full lift and uses the throttle. it *is* a limp mode, as it's not the intended way for the engine to control load, but it would drive mostly fine.
yeah, I was excluding the exhaust side since that's just standard OHC stuff. |

Thanks, Dan.
I'm a fan of your process, obtaining flow data to benchmark the unit before tweaking. A real engineer's approach. 1:55 "this gives us options to look into regrinding the original cams" You have my attention....

Thanks for clarifying. I associate limp mode as in severely limited output but I see what you're saying.

Very cool video!! Thanks!! It helps show and explain how everything works, and pretty much how I thought, but pretty cool to see the inner working in action! And actually gives me a renewed "respect" for the design, as crazy as it is. Look forward to your future videos!

My BMW just fell in love and neither one of us does very well in a long distance relationship; as such, does anyone know a good residential realtor in or around Raleigh, North Carolina?

Dan,you guys keep that shop looking spotless!Being a diesel tech,I'll never see a shop like that, but that's a whole other level, looks great! Now I see how difficult it is to max these heads out ,or even to repair them. Thanks for the vid,it helps when it's understood while watching.

Modifying the the eccentric gear/motor would probably be easier than grinding a whole new cam, but how about the ECU, does it allow you to plug in higher values?

Actually, This motor has a vacuum pump to handle the evap and brake booster functions you're talking about. Its mounted where the high pressure fuel pump would be on the N54.
