I dont want to spend the money for a 1/4" drive torque wrench if i dont have to. Can i tighten them "just past snug", or do i risk f'ing something up badly?

(I have a torque wrench for my lug bolts)

You need a torque wrench for pretty much any mechanical work. If you don't want to spend big, get a beam type wrench with a 3/8 to 1/4 adapter. These are precise enough for low torque applications, and cost very little.

My buddy Meeni is not going to like this answer.... I don't think you need a torque wrench. I didn't use one. The T-stat bolts are steel. The WP bolts are aluminum, but it's so tight working at the WP you really can't get a straight shot at the bolt heads and need universals and extension bars to torque the bolts that any torque reading you'd get (apply) would be meaningless. Snug them up. It's just holding the pump to the block.

Well i bought one.....figured it is good to have one regardless. The one i got ranges from 40-200in/lb, so it should be good for future DIY's too.

I personally wouldn't use a torque wrench for water pump bolts. Hand tight is fine. Disclaimer: I am not liable for any advice
