Fuel Injector Blow-by

I have been having some weird issues and noticed the bank 1 vs bank 2 fuel trims have not been consistent. So after checking the plugs for signs that I might have a leaky injector, I decided to pull the injectors and check them out. Everything looked normal except cylinder 6.

I put another injector in with a new seal, but just wondering what went wrong. The seal on this injector looks fine. Just curious if anyone else experienced this and was it just a seal issue?

My best guess would be that, somehow, water got into that injector tunnel and was evaporated by the heat, leaving the calcium stains on the injector.

IMO, if the seal were leaking you would have black soot or carbon from the combustion process, not the white stains.

How much E85 do you run? Could it be some how related to a bad seal and a lot of ethanol maybe since we all know that stuff likes to absorb moisture?

Pure E85. This has a thick powdery coating, and I can't smell anything. Rubbing it in my fingers seems to have some oily properties to it. It is not a dry powder.

Maybe you had some fuel leak into the tunnel, after the injector was installed, and it evaporated out. Either way, it shows that the injector seal was holding or it would have just run into the cylinder. You would also have the black soot blowing back in the opposite direction.

That isn't entirely true. It would depend on the air fuel ratio, among other things. You're not always going to have black soot.

Have you never pulled a spark plug and found that it was white? Aka an indicator of a lean condition, among other things

When you "read" plugs, you are usually looking at the electrode and a white ceramic insulator ... so yes, the white insulator is white. Have you ever looked at your tailpipe and seen white powder or soot coming out? Maybe they are putting cocaine in your gasoline?

I check/replace the plugs often and also before I pulled the injectors. You can tell a lot from reading your plugs, and they all looked normal to me. The injector did have the decoupling element on it when I took it out.

Since I have the TBI, my mixture gets too rich at times. My tune goes lean at the very beginning, slightly rich at full boost, and the steadies out to normal.

If you've never seen white residue on plugs or exhaust then you haven't been around cars that long. Obviously the ceramic insulator is white. If there is white residue on *metallic* parts, you're running lean/hot or there is coolant contamination burning off.

So the consensus is that the car is running fine, just too much ashy cocaine residue on that injector because that cylinder is running a bit leaner thanks to the throttle body cocaine injection? Got it..
