Modifications and BMW warranty?
How do modifications affect either the BMW AUC or the pay monthly BMW insured warranties?
For example what effect if any would modifications such as performance exhaust, rear diffusers, front splitters, dark lines, suspension mods such as eibach coilovers etc have on these warranties? Would it completely void these warranties or parts of these warranties and is one more susceptible than the other to taking issue with modifications such as the above and causing problems with claims as a result? |

I had just about every performance part on my 320d - spoiler, lip, diffuser, mirrors, PPK, exhaust and had Eibach springs. Made a few warranty claims and had no issues at all

Cosmetic stuff isnt going to be a problem. You might run into issues with an engine claim that could be attributed to an aftermarket exhaust for example, but they would be hard pushed to say it was the cause of your sat nav not working!

Best thing to do (as I did) was email BMW warranty and ask the question - that way you will have a response in writing should the need arise for it.

But if the exhaust was a genuine BMW Performance aftermarket accessory, they'd be on pretty shaky ground!

As Dan above, any style mod's wont effect the running of the car or interfere with the warranty, performance mods however is another issue. Mapping, coilovers, downpipes, decat/dpf delete
BUT if its a BMW performance exhaust, a BMW performance map, BMW any thing and BMW have fitted that to your car then I can still see them trying to wriggle out of it but as its all BMW how can they. I recently had my f11 in for the rear air bag issue, some muppet decided to tell the service manager that the car had been lowered and that I would have to pay for the pleasure, this ended up with me informing him that his engineer was an idiot and that they should go back and check part numbers, THEY WILL TRY ANY THING TO GET OUT OF IT, Lets say I got an apology and ended up paying the access..... |

I had the conversation with BMW when i took out my warranty. They wont cover non-genuine parts if they fail. If the non-genuine part causes something else to fail, then they wont cover that failure either.

I too was going to enquire about this as I've recently taken out insured warranty. I read in my handbook about consequential effects from part to another; so suppose you made a claim for a faulty hub, they could blame it on the coilovers saying that they're not rated for the car. would be interesting to see if they completely void warranty or just the modified part.

I installed the B12 kit and have since claimed for leaking half shafts and wheel bearings. If they were really picky I think they could refuse. They didn't even refuse on the basis of wear and tear.

As some have mentioned it only effects a claim if the modification can be the contributing factor to the issue caused.
I have modified (heavily) all my cars and all had warranty work with no issues. I had the AR catted DP's and Akra exhaust and they still covered the replacement turbo's last year for example. So it all depends. I do have a very good relationship with my dealer though which probably helps.
