Don't get me wrong I LOVE this car... It's the Best car I have owned by far... as well as the Best of the 3 BMW's I have owned.

Concerns:

Reviews of the car always mention" "ALMOST none of the LAG usually associated with Turbos"

Well I don't really find that to be quite true, but onto another issue:

The other day I was doing about 60 and decided to pass this guy in the left lane doing 50. When I pressed accelerated, I suddenly got a neck-snapping "POP" of speed as well as what sounded like an audible "clunk". I DID NOT "kickdown". It just felt wrong.

I was a bit shocked as well as concerned about the sound. It could have been the Engine, the tranny or something loose in the trunk.

Any ideas or similar experiences ?

the clunk was prolly something in the trunk...trying doing it again and see if it happens again

as for the lag...it is minimal compared to many cars...however it is impossible to eliminate it

With the steptronic, there is a kickdown feature if you mash the gas. You can feel it as a resistance point when you nearly have it floored. Doing this will automatically down shift it, no matter what you are in (D, DS, Manual).

I understand that, but as I stated in my post: I DID NOT "kickdown"

You rarely break anything from accelerating from 60mph.
If you never owned a turbocharged car before, even the tiny tiny bmw twins might give you the "surging of power" feeling. More like being sucked into the seat kind of feeling.

The "clunk" was probably the gears in the tranny trying to engage.

The lag on these cars are almost non-existent.
To give you an example, my car doesn't hit full boost by 4800rpm

I think I saw you going down route 40 past Nissan/Acura Dealership a while ago.

I was in my friend's Black 335i and he told me he sees you alot on the road.

well I do drive a lot!! I go to the gym near that acura dealer so that makes sense. Tell your friend to wave or honk or something....don't see many 335's around anyways.

Would like to meet your EVO out on the road just to see what kind of asswhooping it can deliver

I drove a 335xi sedan 6MT today. There was some lag, but no where near what i've had on my subarus, both stock and aftermarket turbos. The power was not that impressive as it is linear and there is no kick to the turbos.

I still want one, but I wasnt as impressed as i'd hoped to be. my 05 WRX was def faster feeling.

That's the funny thing about the 335i, it really doesn't feel as fast at it is. With the torque being so linear, there isn't just the surge that you usually get in a turbo car, which makes it feel slower, even though it is very fast. I have had others tell me this when they are in the passenger seat, and when I tell them what speed we are really going, they are amazed.

+1, I lent my car to my good friend for a day so he could run errands and go to some work appointments. He likes fast cars and has been in my 335 many times. It was only once he drove the car for an extended period of time (ie without me in it) did he realize just how fast/quick this car is. He called me 3 different times telling me about how much fun he was having.....told me he got it to 130........greatttttttt

He was very impressed w/ the power and didnt realize just how quickly it would get up to speed. He said he would row a few gears and look down and he was going 100-110 without realizing it, thinking he was going 80 or so.

mine is quite a bit faster than stock FYI

was the 335 stock? was your WRX stock?

I got my 335xi after owning a modded WRX for a few years. The WRX only feels "faster" because of the oomph you get after the lag (and all that extra road noise etc). The 335 is SO deceptively smooth that it feels slow... but in the end it will make a WRX look like it was going in reverse You weren't impressed by how smooth it was? That is what made me love this car.

I would much much much much much rather have smooth linear power than the typical "turbo" feeling. The 335 pulls to redline in every single gear like no turbo car I've ever been in.... except for maybe an F40 LM but that is slightly different

try a 997 911 turbo if you want to really see what lag is...

From having owned 16 turbo cars(currently 2) I can tell you that the BMW 335i has one of the lesser lag turbo engines ever put in the market.

The size of the turbos compare to the vast majority of the turbos in the market makes them virtually lagless. If the BMW 335i was sold with just one cat instead of 4 cats then it would be almost inexsistent lag.

Even with 4 cats the lag is minimal.

If you were talking about the Porsche 911(965) single turbo then yes but the 997 aren't that bad.

The car only lags below 1500rpm.. most other turbo cars reach full boost well over 2500, some even 4000

The "X" also loses something in translation. It feels totally different than a RWD 335.
