difference between 3pin and 5pin mirrors

what's the difference between 3pin and 5pin mirrors? and is there a way of finding out which one i have without taking the mirror off?

Thanks

Not sure, my 335 0n a 10 plate had LCI wing mirrors and I fitted a set of pre lci electric fold wing mirrors, unless there is a definitive answer from some one it might be a case of take them off and see.

So would you be able to retrofit folding mirrors? Mine doesn't have folding mirrors which would be a nice addition

There are a few things mirrors can have..

Heating
Folding
Dimming
Memory

I'd guess depending on those options depends what the pin count is.

Then there are LCI and Pre-LCI mirrors too that probably differ completely again!

3 pin mirrors use the LIN bus which is used by a module in the mirror to control things like heating, tilting when in reverse and the folding function. The footwell module sends commands over the lin bus to activate the functions.

5 pin mirrors are basically manual in that the heating and tilting function is controlled by the footwell module directly. If you take apart a 5 pin and a 3 pin mirror you'll see the lack of a control module inside the 5 pin mirror.

Can you get the same mirror functionality regardless if you have the 3 pin LIN bus or the 5 pin foot module?

At last the mystery is solved

So if you don't have auto-dim and memory chances are you have a 5 pin.

from other side M3 usually high packed car so you can have memory because you probably have electric seats
do your passenger mirror glass move down when you enable reverse gear ?

On my car I can fold the mirrors using a switch on the door armrest. I get reverse dip, but I can't fold the mirrors with the key fob. I have option 313. I found a description of the options as below. According to the description I should not have reverse tilt.

[430]
Exterior and interior mirrors - folding, automatically dimming
Electrically foldable mirrors
Memorised adjustment controlling door mirror position
Door mirrors ; light sensitive, door mirrors ; light sensitive with automatic tilt feature when reversing
Heated washers
Includes:
[431] Rear-view mirror - automatically dimming
Excludes:
[313] Exterior mirrors, folding
