Sticking On Your Number Plate

I'm in the process of buying a new private plate. Had one some years back, and (foolishly) let it go. Going to have the plates made online, as I intend to change the spacing, slightly. Hoping the Police around here aren't too picky...!

The new one I'm going to be sticking on, rather than screwing. However, I remember from previous attempts, that not all of the products on the market stick as well as they should.

Simple enough, what do people recommend on here? Just don't want it peeling off on a hot day, or after a wash!

I use 2 inch wide velcro from amazon. Easy to remove when you will need to put legal plates on come MOT time

Good shout. I'm only moving one digit to the right....but still an MOT failure as you say.

From my research (and doing the same thing on my last plate in 2005/06), I'm hoping that the Police will be okay....!

I have a friend locally, same plate for 15+ years, not spaced totally legally, and he's never been stopped once!

I would get paranoid someone will just steal my plate even though it's not very common. I decided to get a surround and screw that to the back. Then you can swap plates easily and some surrounds come with a security lock/key

I've moved mine 1 digit. Never had an issue in London. 5mins in Essex and I got pulled by the fuzz. I screw mine in and just get rubber bands for mot

I used to use this place before - 10 years ago - and they're still in business, so I'll be ordering from them. Always good service and pricing.

Main dealer did mine, Sandal Huddersfield - c£30 made and fitted while waiting. Quite good value, bearing in mind how easy it is to cock the job up.

Main dealers are fine - not if you're looking for slightly different spacings.....!

You can't tell its stuck on by velcro. If someone wants your plate, they'll take it however its mounted!

A little OT query - last time I changed registrations, I had to take all the paperwork to the DVLA office, which is quite a way from here!

Anyone know if the procedure can now be done online?

Halfords sticky pads are good tbh.

I've used Butyl tape too.

Thanks guys.

Again, a little off my original topic - but I had plates made this afternoon, and went online to go through the procedure....and within the time it took (a few minutes) the end page tells me I can put them on there and then!

Amazing! I had visions of waiting for my next day off work, and then hours queuing in the DVLA offices....!

Yup new system is superb now. I remember having to queue up in the local office for hours to get sorted.

Even taking off a plate is so straight forward and you get the log book back in a couple of days now too.
