The old VANOS again!!

Hey guys,

Just looking for some more info regarding the VANOS inlet, my EML came on yesterday evening on my way home (previously my EML had come on and the drive was very sluggish, no power and a rough idle - found to be caused by the VANOS solenoid which I had replaced) car is driving fine, idling fine, no rough drive etc.

So took the car to my local garage and found the VANOS inlet code coming up, so we cleared the code and car was driving fine but again tonight the EML has come on, again car is running fine, just wondering what could cause this??

Ive seen that a dirty VANOS filter may cause the error code?? Anybody else had the EML/VANOS issue but car has ran fine?

Any help would be appreciated.

Try the following:

Get up to circa 40mph in 5th
Cruise at 40mph for at least 10 seconds, preferably longer
Floor it

Does it judder what so ever?

The first thing I would advise you to do is to get someone to reset the vanos adaptations. Maybe reset a few other things when you are in there like adaptations for throttle, lambda and octane. I think you should be able to do it with a copy of INPA and a KCAN/DCAN cable. Whoever cleared the codes can probably do it for you.
It's worth a shot. I've had a code on vanos before that never came back after resetting adaptations.

Thanks man.
Well the eml light has now gone off so I suspect the vanos maybe clogged up, so gonna have a look at the DIY on cleaning them out.
Thanks for the replies guys.
