What Not To Do When DIY

I thought I would share my embarrassing story of a little "d'oh moment" that could have led to some not so pleasant consequences. May be others can add some of theirs as I'm sure I'm not alone.

Here it is.

I have decided to replace my MAP/Boost Sensor. Having pulled it out for cleaning before the task is very easy. Remove the engine cover, unplug and pop it out with a plastic interior trim removal tool. The sensor is inserted into a rubber grommet on the intake manifold.

The new sensor comes with a new rubber grommet and I thought I would replace it as well to make sure the sensor gets seated correctly and there are no leaks. Easy. Use the same trim removal tool and pop the grommet out.

So I did. But the old thing of course separated in two and one of the parts naturally ended up in the intake manifold. D'oh.....

A few hours later after a lot of swearing and sweating, by sheer luck a hook made out of a long bbq fork caught the bastard. Relief! My M57 will not have to eat a piece of rubber next time I crank it and give it some boost.

Lesson learned. Remove the grommet with something pulling on the inside of the whole thing.

Here are the pics.

Man, I must have misunderstood the message. I thought that was another endorsement for BBQ!

It's the little things that drive you nuts. When I've done my intake swaps, I've always kept my original MAP and swirl flap actuator with the car and them follow which ever intake was going on. I did remove the grommet before chemical cleaning but haven't ever shredded it like this. I will now be wary of your experience.

I'm guessing you reached through EGR valve/intake throat to hook it ?

Yeah, I took the EGR/TP off and did it from the front. Had a light hooked up through the MAP opening, but could barely see what was going on. Part of the grommet rolled in between the internal "columns" and was hiding. Luck was on my side that night.

"What not do do when DIY" my first though was, drink beer. Personally I would have let my motor eat that rubber. Good on you for fishing it out! Thumbs up for all your expertise over the years, mr yozh!
