"rear brake Pad Thin" warning on iDrive?

So last week I got a "Service Due" warning and took the beast (e90 330xi 21k miles, loves to be driven...) into the dealer to get the filter changed and rear brakes looked at. The dealer replaced the microfilter and did not replace the rear brake pads. Their excuse was that "the software is too sensitive" and that "my rear brake pads are just fine", and that I need to wait for a "software update" so that the warning message no longer is set off.

Does this sound a little suspect? Why would the software originally be "too sensitive" to brake pad usage? Does it make sense to "upgarde" to softare that "isn't as sensitive"? Should I go back and tell them that until they "fix the software" they should replace my brake pads so that I'm not worried/nervous every 5 minutes when my warning chimes go off? Any ideas, sugggestions? has anyone else seen this before?

I have iDrive and have received two false warnings about brake pad wear. 1st was at around 5k and the other around 9k.

Good luck with that!

It's probably a calipbration issue in the CBS (condition based service) system, and the software update should fix that calibration.

they should fix it with a software update or give you new brake pads...

you drive a bimmer, not some cheap kia rio.

no reason why you should be hearing iDrive whine and b**** to you every 5 minutes....

They're not going to replace warranty items early, just because you ask or the sensors went off early.

This is a known issue. My understanding is that v28.1 will hopefully resolve it.

After some thought here's my .002 (adjusted for inflation)

I could care less that my brakes were still in good condition and that I needed to wait for a software update. Obviously BMW was quick enough to sell you the car and demand monthly payments if you stopped paying.
Putting in new pads is what... $200 at most including labor. No new rotors would be needed and you got 20K+ miles from your original set.
Tell them to sit in the car constantly hearing the stupid computer beep at you or shut it off temporarily under a caveat that they schedule in an appointment as soon as the issue is addressed.
I would demand (nicely of course) to the Service Manager or BMWNA that you can't take clients anywhere in your car because it keeps beeping.
Tell them that 10 clients already are hesitating in buying a BMW because the dealer refuses to fix it.

I talked to the service lead at my dealership, he mentioned that this is a known issue (i took a look myself and the pads seem plenty thick) and apparently BMW is working on a software fix for this, and it may take a while.....not sure if that's acceptable.....in the meantime I guess i'll just ignore the warnings on iDrive (if i need to, i'll get them to dish out a loaner while I "wait for a software fix").......just curious if anyone else has seen this issue before?

I had this issue before. I drove straight to the dealership, and they just reset the sensor or something like that. Problem solved...

The rain sensors will cause this problem - I had premature rear brake wear on my former E320 (at 30K miles) due to this issue.
Do not expect the SA to admit this - but it is a common issue for car many mfg's with the rain sensor feature.

I'm bumping this thread I found while searching for info.

I have 54K miles on my E90 330i ('06), and the rear brake pad service due warning came on in the iDrive. Unlike the OP's situation, my rear brake pads were just about completely shot, though the disks look good without any scratches. I really should take a micrometer to them.

In any case, I purchased new brake pads, and the rear sensor. By the way, that sensor is only on the Right Side on the rear brakes. It attaches to the top portion of the inner brake pad after it is installed on the caliper--pretty ingenious set-up. Mechanically, everything works fine, though the iDrive still says that service is due. Either I did not install the new sensor correctly, or the warning message has to be reset by the dealership. I will call tomorrow.
