Something fell off car and it won't drive

so I was driving my car and something sounded like it popped off, the car wouldn't drive and every gear I would throw it in sounded like it would grind. I found a ball joint covered in oil, I have no idea what it is. I'll upload pics when I get the chance.

this is one of the pieces I found on the road, another one was a ball covered in oil. I was thinking maybe the drive shaft? I pushed the car in neutral and it sounds like the noise is coming from the left rear tire

Just did my own research, looks like it could also be the CV broke off, the balls the fell out of my car at the time looked like the ones that are in the CV. Not to mention if I throw it in drive reverse or park the horrid noise it makes

Maybe he has his mechanic do EVERYTHING on his car, too. Then it wouldn't be a nightmare.

I do most of the work myself, but being a full time premed student, it's hard to find the time to get shit done. Esp when you can't find the source of the problem... lol. This ones for the big boys to handle.

would it sound like the gears are grinding if I put it into drive or reverse? Also the car won't move in those gears. it sounds like metal clunking while I was pushing the car.

Both axles and the driveshaft use a CV joint. The following link will hopefully explain things to you.

Piece is rounded and very sharp on the end, looks like it bites into another piece.

Just a question:
If you have no intentions of fixing the car yourself, and it's already been narrowed down to an axle or driveshaft, then what is the point in continued bumping this thread with uninformed guesses?

Not even sure what happened, i was driving casually and it showed my tires lost traction, my revs went to redline and all those things were found on the road.
