How much to chrome plate engine cover?
I just sent out my engine cover to get triple plated at Paul's chrome plating, Inc....I will get a a definate price once they receive my cover...What do you guys think it will cost....I was given a estimate of 500 hundred or so over the phone, but that was just a estimate....I went to a local place in Long Island and they gave me a quote of 2100 to basically do the same job..I don't understand how companies make any money by high balling everything...They just lost a future account!! Well I went with Paul's Chrome Plating, Inc and they can triple chrome plate plastic!!! Its going to look hot with my polished UR Cai and forge DV's and polished oil cap..I will keep you guys posted when the piece comes in...It takes about 6 weeks for the piece to be sent back to me, hopefully by the time Eurofest comes around May 10th...If not I will have the fugliest motor at the meet!!

Not my style. Chrome plated plastic kinda seems a bit rice-ish, but if it ties in with other components of the engine it may sort of possibly work.

It will look pretty damn good I think especially with the compliments of the other polished mods i have in the engine bay...I am not going all out chroming the engine bay, but a couple of accent pieces done the right way, will not make it look ricey at all....Ocha as demented as you are in thinking sometimes, statements that are serious you take it as a joke, whereas statements that are meant as jokes, you take it serious....You definately remind me of my friends!! |

But once it done you will be the first to JOCK it.....Criticism coming from a rough, raw person like you means alot...When you disapprove on something, I take it as positive feedback because you are like a pin lost in a haystack...different!!

1) The Long Island Vendor maybe subbing out the plating or the base coat (usually a copper flash to allow the chome to stick) and marking it up??
2) I'll reserve judgement until I see some pics. Hard to envision??

If you are serious that is going to be some tacky shit. Putting a pink dildo on the hood to flap in the breeze would be something different too but, different doesn't necessarily equal good.

exactly, you can only paint it in a "chrome" like finish. Otherwise, plastic cant stand up to the chemical baths and plating. You cant even plate plastic like you would with metal.

apparently vendors are calling vacuum-metalizing "plating" now, at least in their marketing materials. Maybe they're VMing a base coat, then electroplating over the top of it.

Hmmm... I never thought that plastic could be plated. In any case, that price seems ridiculous. For $100 I would just have the valve cover plated instead.

he'll probably have it painted with a chromed-finish paint.

But for those of you who have never heard of it...here is a aticle about it: Now You Can Chrome Your Plastic Parts! On Sunday mornings, we like to wake up with a cup of tea and have the TV tuned into My Classic Car on the SPEED Channel. Our favorite part of the show is when Dennis Gage showcases someone’s private car collection, like Jay Leno’s, and then gets to drive one or two around the block. But they also have some great tips on caring for your classic. Last Sunday, Dennis was joined by Jim Hespenheide of Paul’s Chrome Plating. Jim has been in the business with his father since 1977, and they have thirty employees who have worked for them from the beginning. Gage went on to say that Paul’s is the “state of the art” place to go for chroming. But in this segment, Jim was there to talk about the company’s latest technique - the chroming of plastic parts. To show an example of this process, Jim brought a few parts with him - a dash piece and radio bezel from a 1965 Barracuda. As Dennis handled each piece, he was surprised by how heavy and thick they were. However, they still fit perfectly! Jim said that their chroming process for plastic adds a great deal of durability to the part as well as a great appearance. He also brought a Bentley grille and a passenger “grab” bar for a motorcycle with him. Each looked better than new and both were much more durable. We were pretty impressed with the demonstration and gave Mr. Hespenheide a call to find out more about the process. He told us, “It’s very exciting to be able to help our customers restore the not only the chrome pieces of the car, but now we can repair and chrome the plastic pieces too.” Essentially what they do is encase a plastic part in copper and then plate it. The process goes like this: 1. The part is taken down to the bare plastic. 2. Any breaks or cracks are repaired. 3. The part is impregnated with silver so it will conduct electricity. 4. Then it is built up with copper, sanded and buffed. 5. A nickel-cobalt plating alloy for corrosion resistance is applied. 6. The final stage is the chrome plating. The charge for this service depends on the part and how many hours it will take to do the job, similarly to how they charge for pot metal plating. If you would like to know more about Paul’s Chrome Plating, you can visit them online at www.paulschrome.com. Their website doesn’t have information regarding plastic part plating yet, Jim says they've just been too busy. If you need to replate your chrome parts, check out our Restoring Your Classic's Chrome Parts page. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() He is serious as I saw him post up mentioning it in a past thread. He has the oil cap chrome and it doesn't look half bad form the pics I've seen. But I agree the ENTIRE engine cover may be a bit over the top. Just my humble opinion... But I do think the DILDO would look better in CHROME too!!! ![]() ![]() |
