The vinyl will help mask some of it, especially if it's a pattern like CF.
My driver's door aluminum trim looked like a dog chewed on it because I guess the previous owner let the seat belt buckle smack the door every single time when taking the belt off. It looks way better now wrapped. If you plan to never un-wrap it, you can smooth out the dents with some bondo or something.

Take a scrap piece of wrap and put it over the worst area and check it out. That'll help you determine if it'll cover it up sufficiently or if you'll want to get a new trim piece.

I had dented brushed aluminum as well. I wrapped it in gloss black metallic at some angle it was kind of noticble because gloss vinyl is thin in general..
Now going with carbon fiber 3m or brushed black aluminum they are much thicker and will cover any imperfections on your trim well. |

No matter what you do, they'll show. Only thing that will slightly hide it is the texture and print of the wrap you use.
Since your trim is shot, why don't you try using some filler and sand smooth wherever the dents are before wrapping? |

Depends what color and texture your wrap is. Carbon fiber will probably hide it best, but like it was stated you can take some sort of filler and fix it since you are wrapping it.
When I wrapped my I had a crack going through the dash trim fortunate for me it wasn't bad, when you look at it you dont see it unless you know where its at. |
