An American Hero

Every American should know this man's name.

The story is here.

Edit: Sorry, this should be in Off Topic. My bad.

It's because of soldiers like him that we can sit at our computers and debate over which wheels we like, which interior colors look the best, and other various meaningless subjects. All soldiers deserve our thanks and appreciation for what they do.

Not much makes me cry but knowing that he probably was more courageous than me does.

Not funny at all. There are times to be humorous and this isn't one of them.

Exactly. Why cheapen this man's sacrifice with a lame joke?

AIRBORNE!

This was in the Stars and Stripes right after it happened. Good to see his actions will never be forgotten.

Notice in the picture he uses no fancy pants rail mounted optical system....iron sights never run out of batteries. A true operator who keeps it simple.

He is dearly missed

I will readily admit that that man has more courage than I could possibly fathom. To jump on a live grenade to save the lives of others...there's so much to think about in so little time. It's one of the most selfless things I've heard in a long time. RIP. He deserves the Medal of Honor for good reason.

The story, and your comment, remind me of this quote:

"Son, we live in a world that has walls and those walls need to be guarded by men with guns. Who's gonna do it? You?"...

"You don't want the truth because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties you want me on that wall, you need me on that wall. We use words like honor, code, loyalty. We use then as the backbone of a life trying to defend something. You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom I provide and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you," and went on your way. Otherwise, I suggest that you pick up a weapon and stand a post. Either way, I don't give a damn what you think you are entitled to."

Great quote. Here is one I like:

It is the soldier, not the reporter,
who has given us Freedom of Press.

It is the soldier, not the poet,
who has given us Freedom of Speech.

It is the soldier, not the campus organizer,
who has given us the Freedom to Demonstrate.

It is the soldier, who salutes the flag,
who serves beneath the flag, and whose coffin is draped by the flag
that allows the protester to burn the flag.

RIP to a great soldier, and person over all. If a live grenade landed in front of me, I would have sh*t a brick and then cowered away...if I was able to move at all. I will honestly admit that I do not possess the courageousness to do what this man did. It's honorable people like this that allow me to stay safe at home and enjoy time with my daughters.

to this man, and all the soldiers out there.
