Check your engine mounts
Took my car in for an unrelated issue. The shop advised me to replace the engine mounts, since both of them have collapsed.
I remember I had one replaced at the dealer a few years ago and never had them checked since. 2011 model, currently 116,700 miles. |

I wonder how they look when they are collapsed? I looked at mine the other day and thought they looked okay but wanted to do a vacuum test to make sure they hold vacuum.

Increased vibrations are also a symptom

Replaced my passenger mount this weekend. Didn't know I was supposed to do both. It was collapsed...not easily identifiable without the two side by side and I didn't take any pictures. I had the "clicking when accelerating and turning left" issue.

I'm expecting mine to look like that as well when I replace them this weekend. My car is making a noise on hard left turns. 109k on the odometer, so I suppose they are due. Just got a new set of engine mounts and trans mounts from FCPEuro delivered this afternoon. Can't wait to get my car back in shape.

I imagine they'll also try to tell you that you need a new oil pan gasket at some point. That's their second favorite money maker. They added comments to two of my invoices "customer notes oil droplets in driveway" without my ever telling them such a thing... and then tried to sell me a new oil pan gasket on the third visit, after establishing a "record" so that they could attempt to submit a warranty claim. The Houston dealers just don't know these cars--the indys are going to be much nicer to your diesel, in my opinion. |

scoundrels! I highly doubt a "collapsed" engine mount is a thing. I always thought the vacuum mechanism has an internal operation that does not raise or lower the mount at all. it simply increased or decreases dampening in a way that is not obvious by doing a visual inspection. Unless a vacuum test was applied or a road test gives it away I don't see how that claim can be made.

These are not your standard Chevy Cavalier engine mounts...these are very technical, multi-range engine vibration control device. Cut off the end and you'll find the vacuum canister that does control the "preload" on the hydraulic damping system. ![]() ![]() Go deeper and you'll open up the hydraulic chamber, complete with the fluid control "valving." Interesting that they're not using glycol and it's a very runny oil, so I'm going to guess that it's close to suspension fluid (I worked for one of the largest manufacturers of engine/trans/etc mounts, and we only ever used glycol in the fluid damper systems). ![]() Go back to the top and you'll see the rubber has in fact collapsed about 10mm. Since I don't have access to a bandsaw and don't feel like cutting it down with a grinder at the moment, we're going to have to assume there is a quality issue/design flaw with the housing/rubber support that breaks. I will update when I cut the housing open (system is assembled and the aluminum is rolled over the rubber element). ![]() |

Very nice awenthol! I like when people do investigative work and come around with qualified technical knowledge. If you can share any more technical insight on how these work, that would be greatly appreciated.
I took pictures of my mounts the other day and it looked like the right mount is a little lower than the left one but both still hold vacuum and are a little distance away from sitting on the rubber stops. My car is at 142kmiles Last edited by Mik325tds; 08-21-2018 at 06:21 PM.. |

Just replaced my motor and tranny mounts this weekend. Took about 4 hours total from start to bonnet closed and tools all put away. Here's a few links of the old vs new parts for comparison (new is on the left). The drive side mount was worn, but not riding on the bump stop. The passenger side, however, was shot and riding on the stop. This combination resulted in the increased vibration felt in the car, and very noticeable noise when taking hard left turns under power/speed. The old tranny mounts looked and felt fine to me, but I replaced them anyhow since I was there and had the parts on hand. They are only $7 each for the Lemforder tranny mounts anyhow.
Also replaced the vacuum lines, since I had the opportunity and the new factory vacuum line on hand. The car is like new again. This project was worthwhile and yielded some satisfying results. My car has 109k miles on it by the way. If you're over 100k, I'd recommend looking at replacing your mounts soon.
